angeleel![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fish Addict Posts: 561 Kudos: 472 Votes: 61 Registered: 08-Feb-2005 ![]() | I recently bought some fake plants for my 80 gallon tank about a month to two months ago now, and in the past week I have been noticeing that three out of the four plants in there at the tops are almost rusting. Could anyone know what this is caused by??? Or if I should bring my plants back to the store.. Thanks Angel Eel I didnt think this belonged in planted because they are fake if I am wrong feel free to move this thread. |

A rust-colored film appears at the tops of plastic plants, and slowly spreads downwards, correct? That has happened with all of my plastic plants, though I won't have to worry about that much with the new live plants I'm getting. You can remove that by simply taking the plant out of the tank, then washing or scrubbing it off. No soap is needed- In fact, it will come off if you rub it between your fingers. That's what I did last week. ![]() EDIT: Oh yes, that is just brown algae of some kind. It isn't particularly harmful or fast-spreading, in my experience. Some of the fake plants use to have wire inserts, is this the case with yours? If so, it may be rust. Jim ![]() |

Though it isn't totally brown in color, it is still considered brown algae, I think. It can't hurt fish, I know that from being too lazy to wipe it off for three or four months. |
