There are a lot of forest tent caterpillars where I live. Can I feed them to my fish on occasion? I think my GSP in particular would love them? So what do you think?

If by "forest tent" caterpillars you mean Malacosoma disstria, it is likely that their bristly hairs might pose a potential risk; the setae of outwardly similar species are often tipped with noxious chemical irritants.

with the last post, i would have to say no also. caterpillars i believe are som - what posion some of them. so it wouldn't be wize to feed something that can harm ur fish. u can try,but to stay on the safe side try feeding worms if u want to give 'em live foods.

The innards of true "forest tents" would likely be safe to feed, but there is always the risk (with both toxic and "safe" species) of (anthropogenic) chemical contamination of tissue.

**** Completely off topic ****

reading about worms made me think of this, do you happen to know if earthworms can survive in the soil of potted plants (I would introduce them of course)?

if these are reg plants and not in water, then i don't see why not. it is soil anyway. but when i said worms i was thinking about blackworms. and blood worms.

SOme people make "worm farms" for their fish.

WHat you do is build a little box, get good soil, and intorduce a few worms.

They will reproduce (since worms have both female and male organs) and you will have a bunch of healthy worms you can feed your fish.

You could also catch small grasshoppers.

I had an Oscar that went nuts of them!
