I just started feeding my fish zucchini. I was wondering how long can I keep it in the tank before it stops being food and starts being waste? I clipped a piece in there last night and nobody has seemed to notice it yet, how long before I should take it out or replace it with another piece?

If anything let it sit only overnight. take it out and replace it with a new piece or a piece of something new if you want to try again.

I assume you put it in there for a pleco...?

It's hit and miss with them. My BN won't touch the stuff. You can also try lettuce and cucumber... or any other veggie for that matter. I remember having success with broccoli, but it clouded the water so bad i stopped using it.

I noticed if they had a raw piece they ignored it until it went a bit soft. But I didn't like to leave it in for more than 1 day. So I soften veggies in hot water or micro first. They have more interest that way.

Lettuce in hot water
zucchini in the micro (not sloppy!)

Good for you for being onto the concept of keeping the water quality in the clear

I leave fruits and veggies in my tanks for 2-3 days. If you're using cucumber or lettuce, be forewarned as these will break down and turn to crap before 2-3 days. I'll talk about zucchini, kiwi, and the like. I rubberband everything to a stone so it sinks before I shut off the lights for the day. The idea behind leaving the food in for longer-than-normal is the majority of nutrients lie in the skin, rather than the soft areas. You want to train your plecos to eat EVERYTHING. BTW, some roads less travelled include: kiwi, pumpkin, peas, and collared greens. Have some driftwood in the tank, as it provides roughage, something plecos really benefit from, especially the panaques.

I placed a thin piece of zucchini with the outer skin (First cut) and being very busy I forgot all about it. Next morning it was all gone and I have not been able to locate it at all.

I usually remove any uneaten extra food within 2-3hrs.
My Profile has a list of all the extras I have given to my fish.

Well after replacing it with a fresh piece, it seems that my swordtails have taken an interest in it. The female seems to be eating and enjoying it. Thanks for all the info. Yah, I think I just recently got the picture that water quality is the key to a successful tank. I always knew that, just never knew how big the role was that it played.

I made the big mistake of trying steamed broccoli in my tanks. Left it in for 1 day - Poohie - did the water smell afterwards! A couple of massive water changes were needed!
