Out of curiousity if a fiddler crab were to escape his home how long could he live wandering about the house?? What kind of places would he most likely hide??
My daughter has (or had?) 2 fiddlder crabs - this weekend we had to move them from their original home into a new tank. The move went great (though we did manage to stir up quite a smell in her room diggin up all their sand and whatnot --YUCK!! --and they were all settled in happily in their new home. BUT......last night when I went in to turn out her lights I only saw one crab. I had thought maybe the other was hiding under or up in the driftwood piece but a very careful (lest my finger should find him before my eyes!!) inspection found no second crab. I know they like to burrow in the sand but I can't find any obvious signs of this (they often excavated very noticeable homes in their original tank) and some very careful probing and digging revealed no second crab. As of this morning I STILL cannot find him!!!!
There are some openings in the cover but there is nothing that reaches high enough, decor wise, that he coud have climbed on to reach those and to my knowledge they aren't able to scale flat glass sides (they never did in the original tank and it had similar openings at the top). I am at a loss -- unless one of the cats inadvertently helped him by sticking their paw in there????
I am at a loss and not to fond of the idea of discovering him when I am not expecting it..............or worse yet the little one finding it?????

They can last several hours. When mine got out I found it about 6 months later in the basement. It got down the stairs and covered several rooms. Any cool dark place would be a good place to start looking.
