I have this problem in my 90 gallon community tank with fin nipping and I'm wondering which fish are doing it... I may remove them, but I'm not sure if the problem is bad enough to take such drastic measures. It just annoys me...

Here are the inhabitants:

7 zebra danios
6 congo tetras
1 BN pleco
3 guppies
2 Angels
2 German Rams
1 powder Blue dwarf gouramis
1 Black ghose knife

I have 2 male congos and 4 females. The males are torn-up down the middle of their tail fin.

The male guppy that I have is torn up pretty bad on his tail fin too.

The 2 angels have minor tears, but look fine.

One of the gourami's pelvic fins is half it's normal size.

The german blue rams are nipped on their spiny dorsal fins a bit.

The rest of the fish look fine. Any ideas?

Zebra's aren't typicall nippers (or at least in my experience). I was going to say the congo's, and since the males both have torn fins probably not them. My guess would be the female congo's?

The danios and Congo tetras are the nippiest fish out of that tank. They both probably nip at their own species somewhat, that's natural behavior. Still, they usually are happy to take swipes at their tankmates, especially ones with long fins.

If the danios don't have screwed-up fins or missing scales, then they might be the main culprits. Keep an eye on them; I've heard of relentless danios pestering slow tankmates to death.

I would say the danios to. I don't think it would be the congos mine are not at all nippy in fact they are the ones likely to be nipped in my tank. I have juat had the same problem in my tank and nailed it down to a female golden gourami. She was nipping one off my parrot fish badly. I also have 1 skirt tetra that is nipping.

I agree with the Danios. Keep a good eye on them & if the nipping continues, just remove them.

I had 8 congos and never did they nip anything even each other. They were always the targets. Now I have 1 male and 1 female left and again they do not nip anything. However the danios I've had were the most annoying fish I've ever come across. They would tear through the tetra school and destroy the fins of everything in the tank. Whether I had 3 or 9 they still did it.

Danios:88) When i was cycling my tank I had 2 zebra danios, and one male was soooooo aggressive to the other, it chased it behind the heater and every time it came out, he would chase him back in again. When returned him, and got another male. Well, atleast we thought it was a male Until..................30,000,000,000 gazillion babies!!!!!!!!!!!!!
