i have seen some of my fish eat gravel. they usually shake their heads and the gravel comes out. what u can do is add larger gravel up the top so the fish can't eat it.

Are you sure?

I have kept large fish (including silver dollars)with both large and regular grain gravel (I never use sand with them--it just gets blown all over the place), without ever having this problem.

Since the fish are dying cut them open to determine if gravel is lodged in their throats. If so change out to a different gravel size, could just be that perfect size.

I have cut a piece of gravel out of a goldfish's eye. Now that was freaky. Odd things do happen, but twice is kinda odd.

Empty chairs at empty tables, the room silent, forlorn.
