Very interesting.

I am doing something similar in my basement garage. I am planning for 5 breeding tanks & 5 other tanks where the fry will grow. At the moment i have the iron tables ready & the glass is being cut. Hopefully by September it will be ready with some help from my friends.

Looks like it is coming along very nicely. How many total tanks and total gals of water will you have when finished? Are you planning on some auto water changing sytem? What kind of filters and heating are you planning on using?

That's great! I'd love to have the space to do something similar.

It will have six 10g tanks thin side out or five 20g not sure yet. Two 85g tall grow out tanks. One 6ft tank and six more 20g for breeding. One 55g grow out tank. Ok for filters i'm going with hydro sponge and for heaters ebo jager's.

Yes, the 10s thin side out, will give you plenty of room, and they make nice breeder tanks for most fish. I use hydro sponges on about 70 of my tanks, and then on most of the 45 larger tanks I use HOB filters (mostly Emperor 400s). SWs are a completely different story.

If you have not finished it yet, I would suggest you look into automatic water changing systems, and set this up before completing your fish room. As when you get that many tanks going, and you will probably add more before you are done, you will find that you have to spend about 1 entire day doing nothing but water changes.

do you have a automatic water change system? If you do can you give me tips and hints or direct me in the direction of a good site that does have automatic water changers?

Basically, they are easily set up. I have half of my room currently set up. I am re-doing my room, to the others will eventually all be set up.

There are basically two ways to set it up. One is a continuous drip system, and the other is automatically turned on and shut off each day. The continuous drip system is the cheapest. Both have to have tanks that are pre-drilled with bulk heads, and have overflows built in them.

With the continuous drip system, you simply have water lines and valves in them. You set the valves to drip water at a rate that will change the amount of water you want changed each week. When setting it up, you count how long it takes to fill a gallon jug, at a setting on the valve. Then you decrease or increase the setting depending on wether you want it quicker or slower. Then just let it go, non-stop. With this system, you simply use the cold water too. As it is placed in the tank at such a slow rate, that the temp never fluctuates due to the water added. Your water will be changing continuously. Cost; drain pipes, drain tubing from the tanks, valves, tubing from the valves, a shut off vavle to regulate the water flow to the tanks.

The other system is done with a water sprinkler computer and setup. Like the systems used to set up water sprinkler systems for lawns. You can program these systems for daily, every other day, weekly, etc. water changes. You can even program them to turn on and off several times per day if you like. With this system, it helps many of your breeders to breed. As many fish breed after a rain in the wild, and the water coming on for about an hour is like the rain. However, with this system, you will need to regulate the water temp, and use hot water as well as cold. If you add only cold, it could cause a drastic water temp drop and stress the fish. Water is changes each time it turns on. You will still need to regulate the water flow from the valves too. Cost; drain pipes, valves, tubing from the valves, drain tubing from the tanks, computer system ($100-$300 US), sylinoids ($30 each)

You just have to decide how much you want to change. I usually recommend about 75-100% water change per week to per 2 weeks. Depending on the bioload of your tank. In other words, my breed tanks get about 50-75% per week water change, while my fry and grow out tanks get 100% per week changes.

If you have chloramine in your water, you will have to add a remover about twice per week in the tanks. As it will build up, and does not dissapate with circulation. Chlorine is not a worry with either set up (with the computer set up, as long as you are doing partial changes several days per week) as the chlorine will evaporate out of the tank. And is in the tank at too low quantity at any given time to harm the fish.

HTH....
