... the best and baddest lfs that anyone has ever been to because it's just like a small zoo that you can spend all day in without even getting through half of it (ask whetu about that one )

Moondog's store hhas a pond full of alligators! (or are they crocodiles... I can't tell the difference ) and it is definitely HUGE.

there is only one that is close by (20 min)so I usually go there, but they don't have much as far as livestock (but are willing to order) or supplies. 99% of my supplies I get online. Livestock I get whenever I get out of town to places where there are more stores to choose from.

We don't have much choise in Malta, as there are only about 6 good shops. I visit 3 of them & buy all my stuff from them.

there are way more than 5-6 stores in my area that i can get to easily, but i only stop in at about 5.

- one because it's next door to my bank, and they have a pretty large range of fish
- one because it's got *the* best prices, hands down, of any lfs in the area (fish *and* tanks)
- one because it's near my vet, and although their prices are outrageous ($500 for a 55g tank with a 4ft light strip ) they usually have nice prices on used equipment
- one small shop in a lps that i go to for my other pets.
- and the best and baddest lfs that anyone has ever been to because it's just like a small zoo that you can spend all day in without even getting through half of it (ask whetu about that one )

I am very fortunate in my area to have a great Aquarium supply and fish store Here in Barrie, Ontario Canada called Big Als. Everything I need, great knowledge and support, and great fish choice! They kept me interested when I was getting frustrated and had lots of questions.

How many fish stores do you typically go to, for purchasing fish, equipment, asking questions, or looking around?

Definitely more than six, and there are still a few in my area I haven't been to yet.

Are they actually worth visiting, or do you go to them out of boredom?

Sometimes I like to browse, but I generally go with some intent (purchase) in mind.

Are there certain stores in your area that you refuse to buy things from?

There are two chain stores that I wouldn't buy fish from, so I don't even bother going to them.

Do you visit any stores in particular just because of an employee that you know?

There is an employee at a lcs I like to visit. We chat about fish and he often saves 'mystery fry' that arrive in shipments for me.

Voted 1-2 stores

We only have two stores where I live one a large petland, the other a locally owned petstore.

MARCH 5TH A NEW PETSMART OPENS!!!!! YEE-HOOO

Both of these stores are over priced terribly, both have somewhat okay tanks depending on who's been working.

I don't refuse to go to any of them, If there were more stores I would prolly go to those, hopefully this new stores is good, its a HUGE store I'd say at least 1100 sq. feet if not more, mind you we have not been inside only looking at shear size from outside.

I do have people that I know who work at the petland, however they don't know much, sadly.

VOTED: More than six stores...

How many fish stores do you typically go to, for purchasing fish, equipment, asking questions, or looking around?

Well...there's obviously the one that I work at. I buy FW fish, and snake food there.

There's a local PetCo and Petland Discounts that I go to for browsing for several random reasons...

There's a store thats about an hour away that has such a big selection, I love to browse whenever we go into the city...

There's another store about 50 minutes away that I get my marine stuff at...

There's an Aquarium Adventure about 45 minutes away that has AWESOME display tanks and a library and whatnot...

Then there's another family owned store about 30 minutes from me that I like to visit when I'm in that area, b/c they have puppies and a really nice store layout.
Then there are a couple of other stores I'm discovering slowly for marine fish/inverts/corals/rocks/etc.

But I order almost all of my equipment and supplies online...better prices, and it's easier to get EXACTLY what you're looking for.

Are they actually worth visiting, or do you go to them out of boredom?

The chains are out of boredom, the other ones are worth visiting most of the time.

Are there certain stores in your area that you refuse to buy things from?

mmhmm...I refuse to buy marine stuff from the store I work at, I refuse to buy equipment that isn't an *emergency* from almost any store...and I'm really picky about where I buy my marine stuff. >.<

Do you visit any stores in particular just because of an employee that you know?

Nope...not as of now.

I have two PetSmarts, which I both find to actually be really good... for a chain store, that is. For more common fish, I'll go there, and certainly for my supplies.

If I can't find it there, I have a PetCo I go to, but I'd never buy their fish (several tanks always seem to be sick)

Then there's four non-chain stores that I go to. Two of them I only ever go to if I can't find it ANYWHERE else, because they sell dyed fish (blech!) and won't listen to me about it.

Then there's a really really good one that has awesome fish, takes orders for fish, very knowledgable, knows me as a regular, etc etc

And then.. That Fish Place! I live within driving distance of it! It's an hour or two away, though, so it's usually a weekend trek for me.

I have been to 5 different stores within an hour of my house. And there are 2 others that I plan to visit before setting up another tank.

Out of the 5 stores that I have already been to, I only frequently visit two of them. I buy just fish at the one store, everything else is too expensive there. I buy everything else(and sometime fish) at That Fish Place. I'm so lucky to have a store like that near me, their prices are great.

I buy my fish at one and one only store, there is another one but i decided to just get them from the one. They have pretty averag prices but equipment are more expencive. They also have really good books there. I get my tanks from another shop but don't buy anything else there. And I am getting 1 fish from anther store because it is mcuh cheaper and there is nothing wrong iwth there fish. I also get filters ans stuff there as they have a great range of eheim. There is another one which i got to sometimes. I don't get fish but I do get plants sometimes.

I go to a small petstore. All there fish are really healthy and have vivid and vibrant colors. I used to go to a large chain of petstores and the fish had very poor quality. I love this petstore and they know there fish!

I go to 1-2 stores, which is really all thats in my area. This puts me in a dilemma, however.

My local petsmart seems to keep their tanks fairly clean, and their fish are always beautiful. However, they usually contract a disease of some sort and die a few weeks after I get them.

My local petco at first seemed better, but lately all their tanks are overcrowded and filled with dead fish. Despite this, the fish I've purchased from here have all lasted so far, with the exception of one.

So I don't know which to keep buying from. Petcos poor treatment, or petsmarts diseases?

Most of the LFS's in my area are chain stores, but they are some privatly owned ones that aren't that much better. Kind of silly that the people who are buying the fish usually know more than the store owners who are selling them. Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? Must be me

Don't have a very large choice. 2 large box stores in town & the other suppliers are basically garden centers that sell some fish & supplies as a sideline
