I was thinking a school of 6 or so tiger barbs, a firemouth cichlid, and 2-3 giant danios. good? bad?

I don't see any problems, apart from Danios like to stay in schools (if i'm correct).

cant u not substitute the giant danios with other smaller danios..that fish requires at least 5 and that will crowd ur tank..they get fairly big and requires lots of swimming space...but if u switch to smaller one..they will have a gud swiimming space in a 29g tank.

I definately wouldn't go with the giant danios, as it's been said they alone would crowd the tank, and do need to be kept in schools of 6 or more...then you could have a happy school of them I must admit I wouldn't have thought of putting danios in with the firemouth cichlid, but that would/will make a nice contrast and combination...hml

yah, i'm trying to cover all three water regions: top, middle, and bottom. the firemouth(s) will cover the bottom, the barbs have the middle, and i was thinking danios at the top... any other suggestions for a top fish that would survive a school of tiger barbs?

If you want to cover the 3 regions you could try this:

Top:

6-8 Hatchet fish

Middle:

Firemouth

Bottom:

6 corydoras species or 1 small pleco (bristlenose come to mind...)

Most fish tend to swim all over the place, even if theyre classfied as top, middle, or bottom dwellers. However hatchet fish and bottom feeders i listed tend to stick to their region often. Your plan, save for the giant danios, sounds very cool. However if your really looking to cover all of your regions a little more precisely, id look into the fish i listed. Those hatchetfish are neat little guys

yah, i've already had hatchets, they are pretty cool, and the bigger the tank the more they move. however, i plan on picking which fish to go into the tank around the tiger barbs.... something tells me hatchets wouldn't go well with tigers... i'd say the firemouths would stay closer to the bottom rather than the middle... i just need a good top fish. i was thinking a paradise fish... even though it's a gourami, this site says they're compatable... i guess it's one of those "you gotta see it to believe it" situations. but yah, i've already made my mind up with the tigers and firemouths... maybe a smaller danio... i've had gold barbs too, they're more middle to bottom (bottom when they sleep). keep the suggestions coming, they're great.

my 29 gallon is pretty tall (30'Long, 18'High, 12'Deep), so it wouldn't look right to have the middle open.
