With no native freshwater bodies (there are NONE ?), you're stuck with a very nice selection of MARINE life..
But you could import ! Welcome to the site

In terms of fishkeeping, malta would be difficult, having seasonal highs and lows of 35 f to over 100f, but there are a few fish from australia that might tolerate these conditions. Desert species from australia might be suitable, often having high tolerances of salt for freshwater fish. There are a number of nice catfish, but getting hold of them might be tricky as australian law can be very awkward towards the import and export of their indigenous species, and obviously any of these species introduced into maltas few and far between water courses could be disastrous for the local fauna.

If youre thinking about keeping fish indoors your options are far more varied, depending on whether or not you can keep room temperatures in the low to mid 70's. Then you could keep pretty much anything.

ps I think malta has aquarist groups too, check this out they may have some regional knowledge and be able to tell you what you can import etc.

Hello Spaced emu, are you a member of the Malta Aquarist Society?.
You can get alot of idea's from our monthly meetings.

In the summer months the temperature is quite high & i don't think that the fish will survive.

It's quite nice to meet other aquarists & share ideas & knowledge. Are you a junior or a senior?. The next meeting will be on the 29th October for juniors & 30th October for seniors.

I think that this months table show will be a Goldfish, not sure what type.

The junior section is quite interesting, with about 25 members attending the meetings & with lots of interesting things aswell.

If Malta did have native freshwater fish, they probably wouldn't be primary freshwater fish such as Siluriforms, Characiforms, or Cypriniforms. They would most likely be secondary freshwater fish like Perches, Gobies, Sculpins, etc...

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.
