ericm & to all who want to listen

I can assure fish are very sensitive to sound. If you were to place your hand on the tank you certainly would be able to feel the virbrations against the glass.

Secondly loud noise will cause you far more damage than you can ever imagine or you care to think about. If you ever hear ringing in your ears after loud music the perminent damage has been done. I know the answer all ready I dont care I like it loud.

When you older and are wearing hearing aids it is then and only then you will realize what you have done. Another side effect is a perminent ringing in your ears 24hrs a day this will also effect your life.

How do I know all this, other than having all the above problems caused by noise (work related) I also have studied it at Masters level at Uni.

Well as I said the volume is at a normal level most of the time... Its only while watching movies where it will be turned up and depending on what level the subwoofer is at (which is not up all the way) the floor slightlyy vibrates. We've had surround sound for over a month and the fish are fine. No stress at all.

Yes it can and will cause stress to the fish.
I'd moniter it closely, and be willing to either turn the volume down or move the fish to another location.
I did lose one fish when I first started from stress, most likely leaving it too close to speakers in the studio while I reviewed a program.
