I am getting a free 55 on Saturday. I've been thinking about what fish(that I don't already have) I could put in it. From what I've heard, it's either a hexagon, or pentagon, so I'm assuming it's tall and not long. My daughter is always wanting me to get clown loaches, would they fit it a 55? I like cichlids, and am thinking maybe some africans? Anyway, any ideas welcome! Don't worry, I'll cycle it first. But with three tanks going now, that shouldn't take too long.

No, and No...
Clowns need a minimum of 100-125 gallons in length. If you ever see them dashing across the tank you'll understand why
The African need at least 55 gallons, but not the height as much as the length, as they need the space to get away from each other
Have you thought about a pair of angels? They love the height. I know Jessnick has a setup similar to that, so you could ask them about it. heidi

i agree with houston.

both clown loaches and african cichlids need more surface area. longer and wider tanks suit them better then tall ones. you will most probably have alot of territorial disputes with rock dwelling africans

I have a pair of angels in my 125. It's a SA tank. Angels, cories, rams, tetras, hatchets and a BN. In my 29 I have a gourami, harlies, and guppies. In my 10 I have a betta, neons and an ADF. So maybe some other loaches? Don't have any of those.

you could make a community tank of some not so common fish. and if u do make any kind of community you'll want to get the most out of the height. An interesting setup would be

hatchets at the surface.

some schooling fish in the middle such as some rainbows to add color

a couple of centerpiece fish such as angels, gouramis, or peaceful cichlids

and at the bottom you could have some interesting plecos or loaches.

good luck

Queen Loaches are very nice and would fit in a 55g.
They are also very active and social like clowns, but only grow to 6 inches.
How about doing something different than what youve already got.
Go with 6 Queen Loaches
How about Rainbowfish? You could go for 6 Boesmani or 6 Irian Reds, and perhaps 8 Threadfins and 8 Celebes as well.
That would look awesome.
Or if you wanted more sizeable fish go with
6 Queen Loaches
2 Parrot fish
12 Buenos Aires Tetra

how about changing round your SA tank, which is 125G, move some of the fish from there into the 55 Gallon, like cthe corys, hatchetfish etc. Then maybe you could get them

You can have a few Yoyo Loaches in there with some "peaceful" Cichluids, or else change the tanks & go with CL's in the 125 gal.

You can have some african cichlids in there you just have to be careful which ones. You could have a cool shell dweller colony in there. With maybe a small school of leptosma cyprichromis. Or you could go with a colony of julies. Lake tanganyika cichlids would be the best.

Actually my 125 is lightly stocked. 2 angels, 2 rams, 10 cories, 5 hatchets, 6 lemon tetras, 10 rummy nose, and a BN. So....I could move some. Hmm, I don't know . I like the idea of them all being SA. But maybe queen loaches. That would be cool. I am not that interested in pleasing my daughter, she laughs at me cuz of all my fish! Which africans stay smallish and are not extremely aggressive?
