Two out of four wasn't a bad run

Even so, I like these critters. However, given what you've said about the reproductive rate, and that things that reproduce moderately well in other people#'s aquaria tend to explode population wise in mine, I'd better start finding ways of making them a fashionable celebrity delicacy in order to offload the surplus

This is the largest one I can find atm (about 1/2" ). The big ones only come out at night. As I had stated before, mine aren't terribly attractive.

They were listed for $5.99, but I got them for about $3 since I work at the store.

Okay, well then. Maybe I have some similarly sized, but much less attractive limpets. My largest ones are about 3/4".

Nope, I haven't seen any babies whatsoever in my tank, and I've had them for a few weeks now. I hope they breed, though. Lots of people are interested in them.

As far as their compatibility with fish goes, I have observed that they are pretty much safe with anything that isn't too aggressive. Because they move so slow, most fish just ignore them.

How big are yours, Lifenoodles? My biggest ones are about an inch long, and if yours are significantly smaller, that might explain their out-of-control breeding.

I'm not sure--I know for a fact that I have a different species of limpet (which mind you, is fairly unattractive). The one pictured above, apparently have not reproduced in large numbers thus far. I'm not sure whether they're hermaphroditic or not. Don't quote me on that, though--heck, it'd probably be better if you waited for her to respond.

At work we got in some really interesting Gastopods, and I am trying to figure out what they are. They came in as "abalone snails", and that's pretty much what they are.

They look like snails except it's like they have clam shells. They do not have segmented shells like chitons, but they don't have holes in their shells either like limpets and abalones do. Does anyone know what they are?

The manager saaid that he didn't know much about them, but that he heard that they were good for planted tanks. I went ahead and bought four of them, and they seem to have settled in nicely. Behaviour wise, they are exactly like snails except they crawl a bit slower. They are very interesting creatures and have beautiful shells, and I think that if these ones do well I will get some more.

Here are some pictures of them...

"Got a taxonomic name for those Cory_Addict? Only they look WONDERFUL ... even though they're not even distantly related, the shell pattern reminds me of some marine Cowries or Cone Shells. I didn't think anything that attractive existed among the freshwater molluscs, with the exception of the blue-shelled Pomacea Snail."
I believe they are of the species septaria.

"First question: have these been 'road tested' for fish compatibility?"
If I recall the stocking of your tank, you should be fine. In fact, I've got carinotetraodons specifically for limpet eradication, since none of my other gastropod feeding species will touch them.

"Second question: do they have any life cycle complications (e.g., parasitic larval stages similar to the Glochidia of freshwater clams)?"
No sir. I'm up to my armpits in these fellows (rather, a smaller species), and nothing yet. I started with a pair on an anubias rhizome, mind you.

"Third question: are they likely to attack BGA? Because if they are, they are destined for a BIG aquarium career."
I'm still battling BGA in my ten, so no.

"Fourth question: are they likely to eat fish eggs? Only I'm looking around for a solution to algal growth in an aquarium that can't have the usual run of snails because they will probably snack upon any eggs laid in it. A solution that is nice and eco-friendly, and involves nice tame organisms that do the job"
Yep, they sure will; they ARE snails. Given the chance, just about any scavenging critter you're likely to find will feast on caviar.

If I get the right answers to all four of the aboive, I might avail myself of these critters myself. They are WAY more attractive than the usual run of aquarium snails we see here in the UK, unless certain species are acquired via special order (at the usual premium cost - sigh). Those little limpet things look SO cute ...

I'm actually trying my best to starve them. However, as far as I can gather, they'll go for anything they can get. Meaty foods and algae are probably safe bets (it's all I put in my ten gallon).

Awesome... They don't seem too active though; in the four days I have had mine, one of them has crawled along the glass to the back of the tank. The others mainly just crawl on the front glass and on the gravel.

Do you know what kind of foods they like?

It's a species of freshwater limpet. I have a smaller species in my aquarium. Be careful-they reproduce like mad.

Well we ordered them intentionally, but we had no idea what they were. We just saw the name "Abalone Snail" on the list and thought it would be cool to find out what they were.

I have no idea about even what part of the world they come from. I Googled "abalone snail", and the only results I got were for saltwater animals that didn't bear to much resemblance to my snails.

were they ordered in, come in as a mistake, or come in as a substitute?

If they were ordered in or came in as a mistake as to what they really are, that is one place to start. Even if they are not what they are labeled, they are usually similar to what they came in as.

If they are a substitute, call the distributor. Again, they should give you enough information to get a starting point.
