i often see them at my lfs, but i hear that they aren't very hardy, and may die very soon in a home aquaria.

Actually they do fine, if given the proper requirements. The problem is with these fish, is when they are caught at the lfs. They have a very strong suction hold on the glass. And many lfs employees don't take the time to catch them properly, and in not doing so, they damage/injure them and thus this is the cause of death down the road in the home aquariums.

I have kept these guys many times for years without any problems.

You just have to take care when catching them, and even when letting them out of the bag, because they will also attach strongly to the inside of the bags. You may end up having to turn the bag inside out, and letting it just hang there for a while, while the fish takes its time to let go.

Just to add, they also like a good strong current.

I would say so. I kept mine in a 55 gal. But IMO, a 20 gal would be just fine.
