The tank at my high school is full of this weird clumpy black algae. It looks almost like fuzz from a sweater and is attached to plants but also is just scattered on the gravel in round clumps. Is this black beard algae? How do I get rid of it? There are currently no fish in the tank and the light is usually off. Although in the past it has been left on for way too long. I don't know the water quality.

Since there is nothing living in there, except the algea, the tank would need to be torn down and cleaned very well before fish could live in there, including recycled. The cleaning would get rid of the algea.

yeah, that's what I would do. The teacher who owns the tank doesn't want to take it down *rolls eyes* He's just going to have to face the facts. I used to take care of the tank (mostly just feed the fish) but I gave up after he refused to do water changes. Now that I'm a senior I really don't care.

If there's no fish in there, leave it as is and the teacher will leave it or clean it. Maybe if he ignores the tank, you have an opportunity to gain a tank.
