So I went home from school for a few days last week. I came home and started counting my fish just to make sure all hell didn't break loose while I was gone. After doing my count I couldn't find one of my Giant Danios. I look for a floater and a belly up sinker but there was neather. I started looking out side the tank and found him all shriveled up. I kind of felt bad for the guy. What would make him jump ship like that? Or are the chances that it was an acident?

All danios are excellent jumpers and will do so even when there is no apparent reason. Presumably, they would so it in the wild to reach new waters by jumping over barriers such as logs and rocks. The also have a habit of jumping into small rapids and waterfalls. At home the only "waterfall" they have to jump up is the filter, and if they miss it can send them flying down onto the floor.

Sorry about your fish. Just make sure you cover up any gaps or holes in the top of your tank so another fish doesn't "commit suicide".

I think I am going to make my self some plexy glass covers for the back of my tank. Thanks for the info. I have had my Giant Danios jump out of bucks I kept them in while moving tanks but nothing more than that. Poor guy! Thanks for the info!

a fish that jumps out isnt commiting suicide.

Commiting suicide is a choice, and i honostly dont think fish are remotly smart enough to even do that.

Hence the quotations...

It was simply a more humorous way of saying "jumping out of the tank and shriveling up on the floor".

i cut up plastic gallon milk containers for blocking any potential "jumping" spots. it is very easy to cut, cheap, and a hole punch allows me to run air hoses thru it. it is also fairly flexible.

another added bonus- i simply replace it when deposits build up on it. scrubbing plexiglass is a pain.

Yes Giant Danios are notorious jumpers I (recently) had a GD jump from a half full 5 gallon bucket to probably over a foot and half over the brim. Had I not been there to see it and reacted a few seconds later he wouldn't have been dried up and shriveled but instead an afternoon snack for the cats.
