I am thinking about getting a giant gourami, but what would be some good fish to go with it.

What size tank are you planning on keep this fish in?

As they get extremely large, both horizontally, as well as vertically. If you will be adding additional fish, then you will need to make sure you have enough additional room for the additional fish.

I have a 125 gallon. I was thinking about the following:
8 Neons
2 Loaches
2-3 Tiger Barbs

I already have the following:
1 chinese algae eater
2 gouramis
1 pleco
1 rainbow shark
2 silver mollys

Well your probably not going to be want to keep the neons and tiger barbs together as tigers and neons do not mix well together. So I'd decide on one or the other. If you go with the tiger barbs I'd defintinely add at least 3 more as they are shoaling fish and do much better in shoals of at least 6. Also hopefully it will keep them from nipping at any other fish. You may also want to add a few more loaches too, about 3 more of those would be nice.

A 125 is much too small, as this fish, when full grown, will occupy 1/3 of that tank space.

Since these fish get almost 3' long, red tailed catfish, irridescent sharks, pacus are all good tank mates.

a 2000+ gallon tank should be good for them.

You wouldn't want to keep the giant gourami with small fish. When it gets big, it will most likely try to eat your mollys and the other smaller fish. A good rule of thumb regarding that is to make sure that none of your fish can fit inside the mouth of any of your other fish, since big fish do eat small fish. Also, since giant gouramis tend to be semi-aggressive, especially with other gouramis, you may end up with some fighting. If you do decide to get one, I would consider selling it once it got very large (that's what I'm doing with mine) or putting it with fish that are more compatable with it.

Oh, and one last thought... since they can be aggressive, you might want to think about putting a more aggressive fish with it to calm it down. Mine is with an opaline gourami and a paradise fish. It's an odd mix, I know, but it's working to keep the whole calm for my peaceful fish.

Well, good luck with whatever you decide.
