Hi there,
I have cleared out my guppies and want
to do something different in my 10g tank.
I saw some "Golden Wonder Killies"
in my local fish store, and was wondering
what people cal tell me about them.
I have read the profile.
They had a golden wonder killie in the tank with
a smaller, blueish colored one with black vertical stripes?
Is that the female? How do you tell the male and female apart.
Thanks.

This species is often touted as a good beginners killie, god knows why though , they have all the usual problems such as preferring live foods, rarely taking flake, jumping out the water, living only 2 years. They are a bit less difficult to care for as regards water quality than some, liking it medium hard , slightly alkaline, top end 70's early 80's temps. They often breed themselves to death if allowed to. They can be REALLY agressive with each other too, so despite the fact accomodations may not need to be huge, you may need several groups and multiple tanks to keep them going.

Females have larger black banding than males, the males often seem a bit brighter overall.Indian species, probably regularly collected, hence the "beginners" reputation.

I have three males. They are easy to keep, in my experience. Mine will eat eall my flakes(aquarian, OSI spirulina, tetra color), they will catch shrimp pellets on the way down and eat them, they love frozen foods and live foods. They will fight with each other, so I separated them. They are beautiful. Mine live well in 0 nitrites and ammonia, but the nitrate is a bit high, usually around 60 ppm.

Good luck, I think you would like them. I have never had a female, so never tried to breed them. My oldest is @2 years old now.

Would it be ok then to keep just 1
male of these fish? Do they need
to be kept in groups?
Do they eat smaller fish, like could
I keep 1 golden wonder killie in a tank
with some Beckfords pencilfish?

definetly ok to keep only one male. I keep a full grown one with neons without a problem. I would think the pencil fish would be ok too.

Katie, oh my gosh!
6 inches eh!
Well maybe I will get a single male
for my 75g tank then.
Seems to me, no matter how undemanding of space
they are, that a 10g tank would be wayyyyy too
small for a 6 inch fish of any type!

True!

There are many smaller killi species that would be perfect for your ten and are pretty hardy.

Aphyosemion australe comes to mind:

5 inch adult would be much more common than 6 inches.
