| Good setup or bad?? | |
lilfishy![]() Small Fry Posts: 13 Kudos: 9 Votes: 0 Registered: 03-Feb-2005 ![]() | In my 29 gallon tank I have 2 male guppies, 4 zebra danios, 2 black tetras, 4 neons, 2 small platys, and 1 algae eater. Is this a good setup or a bad one? Can I add more fish and if so, what kind would be best for this tank? If bad, what fish should I move to the ten gallon that has 4 guppies in it?? Help!!! I did have 2 other platys but they didn't make it and I am not sure why. Also, are real plants a big help for a 29 g tank?? ![]() I am so confused! |

Up the numbers of all your tetras (neons included) and the danios. You will be a bit over stocked, but not so much that you need to worry. Just keep up on water changes and you will be fine. |

What type of Algae Eater do you have?. http://www.geocities.com/alexis_brincat/ http://www.deathbydyeing.org/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

I am not sure what kind I got it at Petsmart and they said it was one that will only get to be about 6 inches long full grown?? So do I have to take out the platys to be able to add the neons and the tetras?? Or just add them? The platys are tiny right now maybe 1/4 inch, are those the platys that get to be 4 inches? Or are there different kinds of platys?:%) |

ghostfish![]() ![]() Hobbyist Posts: 101 Kudos: 79 Votes: 4 Registered: 23-Nov-2004 ![]() | Go mostly with what marypa said and remove the platies and the algae eater get about 4 ottos they get to about 1 inch long and up the schools of danios and tetras to about 6 of each species. |
whetu![]() ![]() Mega Fish Posts: 900 Votes: 63 Registered: 31-Jan-2003 ![]() | 4 zebra danios - these need to be in a school of six or more, and may nip other fish (although I've always found mine to be peaceful) They are less likely to be nippy if kept in a school. 2 black tetras - also need to be in a school of 6 + 4 neons - another school of 6 needed here 1 algae eater - one that grows to 6 inches will be too big for your tank. I agree with the recommendation to remove it and replace it with a few ottos (3 or 4 perhaps) If your tank only contained the three schools of six, plus the ottos, it wouldn't be over stocked in my opinion. Just watch the behaviour of the danios towards the other fish and make sure they all have somewhere to go to get out of each others' way. what fish should I move to the ten gallon that has 4 guppies in it? Is there a reason why your 2 male guppies aren't already in the 10 gallon guppy tank? With the platies, what sex are they? If you have 1m, 1f you might end up with a population explosion, or maybe just some live food for their tank mates. Also, are real plants a big help for a 29 g tank? Personally I'm a fan of live plants in any size tank, but that's just me. Plenty of other people around here are happy with fake plants, and with live plants you need to have the right setup (especially lighting). I suggest you do some more research before deciding. ![]() |
lilfishy![]() Small Fry Posts: 13 Kudos: 9 Votes: 0 Registered: 03-Feb-2005 ![]() | Thank you for your help! Well, I was trying to get rid of the ten gallon tank, the four guppies that are in there now are older the two in the new tank are newer. I was going to put them all in the 29 gallon tank. I hate to say it but with the cycling of my tank I wasn't sure that all the fish I have would make it through, they did. Now I am not sure where to go. I guess I will keep both tanks and then up the others to schools though Last edited by lilfishy at 23-Feb-2005 23:44 |
