There's a type of this annoying algae on all four sides of my tank and on a large flat rock on the gravel. It grows so rapidly and it's little green dots on the glass and rock. It's extremely hard to get rid of with those magnet things. I have a flying fox (who seemed to take care of that hair algae I had once) and a bristlenose who won't touch the stuff. I have also had two oto's which wouldn't touch it either. Nor didthose Mystery snails. Any ideas on what this stuff is and how to get rid of it?? It makes the tank look so bad. Like its covered in a thin la I hate this algae, please help. Sumo |

I'm surprised that the Ottos & BN aren't eating the Algae. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

It is very annoying stuff, and is a pain to have to scrub off. Unfortunately, scrubbing is the best way to get rid of it. You'll just have to keep going with the elbow grease until you can find out what is causing the algae. If you can eliminate the source of the algae's nutrition, you can eliminate the algae. |

Even if youre rigourous with cleaning and not overfeeding its likely you will get small amounts of this algae anyway, it can be persistant, but if as you describe you have loads of it, you really do need to address the nitrate levels. Sometimes just having an aquaria that has irregular water chemistry seems to provoke it, ive noticed that after cycling a tank its the first algae to grow after the brown algae has gone. From that point of view I suspect its possible that excessive percentage water changes could be the cause of it too. Try doing the changes little and often.
