I know this topic has been covered several times before, but I can't find a recent thread about it. I have a lot of green algae in my 10 gallon tank. I have some tetras in there, 2 albino corys and one betta. What could be causing the algae??

Thanks,
Julie :88)

Hi Julie,
Here is a link to a very good site. It shows examples of
the various types of algae, describes it, what causes it,
and how to eliminate it...

Hope this helps.

Excessive light and nutrients .
Do you have any live plants in there to outcompeate the algae?

I'd suggest small daily water changes combined with keeping the lights out for a few days. Be sure to do a good deep gravel vac over a small portion (not the whole tank!) with each WC.

Balagirl.. I have the same problem in my 10g. I can't get rid of it. I'm gonna try the small daily water changes. I don't have time to gravel vac every day though. I don't have plants so it must be from my nitrates. They are usually high.
Good Luck!

Maybe overfeeding & too much light. Water changes & live plants will help you outcompete it.

Thanks for your help everyone !! I have been leaving the light on more than usual lately. I'll try turning it off more and see how it goes.

Less lights should help, along with less feeding. I find that in one tank if I leave the lights on for too long, I get hair algae, but after a partial water change it decreases and lower light levels helps to get rid of most of it.

green hair algea need both lots of light and lots of phosphates. deal with either, and they'll calm down.

don't let food to settle uneaten, and maybe plant some (more) live plants to get rid of the access phosphates.
reduce lighting otherwise.

I have green algae on the sides of my hex tank and black hair algae in all my tanks except the 35. it drives me nuts and eventually kills the plants.

i am going to try the WC changes thing.

something has to work
