Hi,

Here's a timeline of events that you'll need to understand my problem:

A while back: I had a 20 gallon tank with 1 angel fish in it and teh water turned really nasty green, i changed the water and it did nothing, tried chemicals, snails, etc, nothing fixed it. so I removed the fish from the tank and set up a new tank for it.

The tank sat in my closet for a long time with most of the water removed.

Now: I've decided to set the tank back up, and amazingly the snails were STILL ALIVE in the tank after a couple of years of the tank being almost empty(Thought that was kind of cool), but so is the green stuff, i filled the tank back up and its green again, and i've tried all sorts of anti algae stuff(several diff brands), some of that clearing stuff, and still it remains green!!!!

Am i going to have to take the gravel out and run some super hot water over it or something, because thats about the only thing i havent done.

Or, should I toss the gravel and get new?

-Carl

hi mossy....

It really depends on how much work you are willing to do and go through...

If you are really fond of the gravel and are willing to go through rinsing it go for it, it shouldn't be too hard really, just running it in a large bucket in the bathtub and running water, swishing it, running water, swishing it, so on and so forth....if you don't want to do this, go ahead and get some new gravel

Then scrub down the tank itself with "normal" temp water, don't want to crack the glass from too hot or cold

Next when you set it up, set it up away from windows, and be careful not to overfeed...then you should be good to go...

best of luck

Hi,
Here is a link that deals specifically with Green Water,
what causes it, and how to get rid of it, and how to not
get that problem again:

well, there wasn't any ecosystem going in the tank to speak of, so i just emptied the nasty green water out and took the tank to the tub, and rinsed the gravel with really really hot water, several times until when i moved the gravel around , it remained clear.

And the green water is gone!

Thanks for your help guys

oh yeah, missed the part about you saying not to use hot or cold water until now, luckily I didnt break the glass or anything.

Will keep that in mind next time(hopefully there isn't a next time I have to do this).
