I currently have a 20 gal with about 7 adult guppies and 5 neons. My problem is guppy fry overload... the tank was formally a turtle tank, and the turtle would eat all the fry and leave the adults alone because he was too small to eat them. Unfortunately, my little turtle has passed away , leaving many uneaten guppy fry. My question -- can anyone recommend a fish that will eat the guppy fry but leave the other fish alone? Some of them are eaten by the neons or other guppies, but it's not enough. The tank has a few live plants and is very well-filtered.

Let the fry grow out then give them to your LFS.

Small cichlids like Apistogramma species could help.

Let them grow & give them away for free.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check with my LFS about the guppies, and also do some research on the cichlids... still open to other suggestions though

Get a larger tank and raise your fry. Don't add any plants to either of the two tanks, as this will not give the fry any hiding places. Go a day or two or three and don't feed the guppies, this will force the adults to become hungry and possibly look at the fry as food.

Check your yellow pages, and online yellow pages you will be amazed at how many other Ma and Pa lfs are in the area and surrounding area. Call them and see if they will give you store credit, or take the fry.

Now saying you raise these fry, or give up raising these fry and still can't find a place for them, there is always this...I'd use this as my last attempt and only thenAt one point I was in your same predictament before I found some lfs that would take my fry/teenagers/adults and I hap hazardly mentioned to on of the PetSmart employees, that if I couldn't find a place for the fry I was going to come and dump them into their plant tanks, and guppy tanks. The girl looked at me, then told me that it had been done beforethat would be only if I got very very desperate though

Otherwise, I am sure you can find a mom and pop lfs in your area who will take them. Or find a school teacher who might be willing to start a tank...

Most importantly dont give up there is always hoe. If you finally can't do anything with them, think of getting other fish, as livebearers might not be for you right now due to the area you live in...Heidi

Unfortunately, getting a larger tank isn't really an option right now... But if I gave away the all females and fry, would the males fight?

I'd suggest you go and get a dwarf gourami, they're small, colorful, would get along with the other fish and would make quick work of the guppy fry.

I don't know about the gourami... I read somewhere once that gouramis and neon tetras had a compatibility issue

If there are NO females in the tank, you shouldn't have problems witht he males fighting.

I have 2 dwarfs and a paradise fish with my neons right now, and absolutly no problem. Guess sometimes it works, sometimes it don't.
