| HELP I'VE BRED FREAKS | |
John l Doe![]() Fingerling Posts: 17 Kudos: 13 Votes: 0 Registered: 28-Apr-2005 ![]() | I had 2 fish for awhile they seemed to be acting weird swishing there tails together its a Spotted Platy (m) And a yellow balloon Mollie (f) now they had bred and I have no idea what to call them or what to do I cant find anything about them is this because they are just mutts no one cares or is this a first to happen I’ve talked to some fish experts that told me they cant breed but I’m sorry they did I have fry about 1 1/2 months old growing like mad that are part balloon and part spotted they all look a little different with a mix of the 2 kind of weird but cute little buggers there are 6 she had about 13 most died in the filter because we didn’t know about them tell we saw them dart across the tank and I looked in the filter so basically the filter saved those 6 because other wise they would have gotten eater by mom & dad "tank at the time was a 5 gallon hex with aqua clear 150 filter" current tank is a 55 gallon with emperor 400b filter they are currently in a breeding cage for there protection so an ideas sorry no photos yet I’m working on it |

This is common for livebearers (fish that give birth to live fry) Livebearers are known for staying pregnant...this is because once a female has been fertilized she can have fry for 6-9 months just from that one encounter Hope that helps with the question...Best of luck "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." Livebearers can store sperm for months, 6-9 months is not an exaggeration. And because they female may have been with other males during that time period the fry often don't look like we expect in regards to color and/or patterns.
