I was cleaning my 20 gallon aquarium because I am going out of town tomorrow and I noticed 20 or so eggs on the back wall of the tank. I have never had fish lay eggs...I have only had experience with livebearers. The fish in the tank are 5 black neon tetras, 3 albino corydoras, 3 black mollys and 1 female betta. I know it couldnt be the mollys or the bettas, so I was wondering who the eggs belong to, and what should I do since I am leaving tomorrow. Thanks for any help.

Hey, welcome to Fish Profiles.

The eggs belong to the albino cories (Corydoras aeneus), since that species has been proven to be easy to spawn in captivity and they do lay eggs on flat surfaces. The best way to care for such eggs is to have another tank already set up for them, but it looks like you're in a bit of a bind. It is easier to successfully hatch them when you've prepared beforehand. Leaving the eggs in the tank they're in will probably result in a lot of them not making it, but unless you have a spare setup then there isn't much you can do. I think the important thing here is that if you want to raise these catfish eggs, just be ready for them in the future.

Hopefully the below thread will help you a bit with fry rearing techniques. http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Breeding%20Advice/64471.html

The tetra is there to get a meal, most likely.

Cories tend to lay larger eggs on tank walls, so it's them. If you would like to save them, just scrape them off very softly with your finger or a thin piece of plastic and put them somewhere safe. Avoid exposure to air and use the water you have in the tank.

The black neon tetras are egg scatterers, and release non-adhesive eggs which basically just sink to the substrate. The tetras basically just let their eggs fall where they may. Corydoras stick their eggs to areas which have often been pre-selected. Their eggs are generally found (as you have discovered) on aquarium glass or on other flat surfaces.

Ive just recently had my first (and many more) experiences with my albino cories laying eggs all over the tank and now have to breeding nets sitting on the sides of my tank full of baby cories.. they are so cute! i bought a turkey baster (i read about it on a website) and used that to get the eggs into the net.. also i found using a long finger nail you can scrape then into the breeding net.. arund 95% of my eggs have hatched.ive just had no luck with them on leaves as they go mouldy easily.
Have baby food on hand as well i found they hatched just after a couple of days!

Goodluck!

Just scrape them off the glass & put them in a floating container & add an air stone & some anti fungus drops.
