It usually takes a month to cycle a tank. And it is allright, the same thing happened to me. I only have 3 neons left after buying like 20 or so. |
integra_for_life![]() Hobbyist Posts: 51 Kudos: 29 Votes: 0 Registered: 12-Mar-2005 ![]() | Also, here are some of my plans This will be setup for a scheeoling fish, maybe Neon tetras 29 Gallon AGA Penguin Filter W/Bio-Wheel Rena Air pump(s) Submersed Heater ( What brand?? ) Lighting ( Still re-searching ) Full Test Kit(s) Live plants Gravel Electronic Temp gauge + the normal crystal temp gauge Air tubing, stones etc.... I am thinking of filing it with some type of schooling fish, I have been thinking many neon tetras would be the best choice. I am not going to be getting a 55G tank, if I do I wont stock it with a schooling fish, which is what im after. ighs: oh well i'll ttylLater, ![]() |

Hope you find it as rewarding as with tinkering with your car. ![]() Well, at this time you have your fish and you have your tank, so it'd be best to work in a go-forward basis. My first advice is to read read read everything you can about the hobby. Reviewing past posts here is a good starter. Most initial questions can be answered that way (including the FAQ which is filled with valuable information) and by using the Search function. I know time is scarce, but educating yourself is well worth it. Now, for your tank. I admire you admitting the err of your ways, but this really is an exciting hobby and we all want to get 'up to speed' as soon as possible. A normal human trait, so don't sweat it. I'd advise you purchase some test kits. They're not too expensive and you're going to need them eventually anyway. You'll want test kits for Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate. A pH test kit is also good to have. It sounds like you've already familiarized yourself with the concept of the "cycle", so I won't expound on it here. For the present, I'd suggest taking water measurement tests and performing partial water changes to reduce the toxin level. This will result in a longer-than-expected cycle completion, but it will also reduce the concentration of toxin your specimens are exposed to. Your tests will tell you how much water you'll need to change. I'd guess about a gallon of water every few days. Make sure your water sits for about a day before adding to the tank. That'll 'gas out' the chlorine. If you have a public water supply that uses chloramine, then your best best would be to purchase a water conditioner and treat your water with it before adding. Good luck, have fun, and don't panic. -Wayne |

Cycle your main tank (i would use a fishless cycle) and when it cycled put the neons back in (but where you are storing the neons, do alot of water changed on the holding captivity. OR You can go down to the local fish store (LFS) and get a product called Biospira, which will literally instantly cycle your tank, and you wolnt have to worry about the other neons ![]() GOod luck ! |
integra_for_life![]() Hobbyist Posts: 51 Kudos: 29 Votes: 0 Registered: 12-Mar-2005 ![]() | Hey, Yes, I realize the mistake I have made, and how severe it may be. I set up the tank, put in the water, I used AquaSafe, and let it run for two days, before you all start flamin me I know, this is nowhere near anuf time, Becuase of this mistake I am goin to pay, :#( :#( :#( And my fish are also going to pay. Moving on, I love fish, I enjoy going to my aunts house, She has a few 20G freshwater and a 55G or two and she just got a HUGE Tank, not sure what size but it is just HUGE, She has a slatwater or two, Her house is just awsome, I am unhappy with myself for not thinking and taking the time to cyle the tank etc...., Unfotinaly its too late, I personally enjoy fish very much, Just being able to see a part of an ocean while sitting at home it just so cool ![]() I realize the only thing I can do now is test the water and try to flip this mistake around, I have decided not to buy anymore fish as that would prolly make things worse, IDK im talking a little too much, Later, ![]() |

Posts: 2623 Kudos: 2462 Votes: 337 Registered: 29-Mar-2003 ![]() | Welcome to FP, Chances are the neon won't make it By the looks of the pictures, which are quite good, thanks for sharing, you just put the water in today, and the fish in today? Did you use any kind of bacteria starter? Water treatment? If you didn't you are at risk of losing all of you neons I know the joys of a new tank and wanting to stock it all at once, but you have to go slow and steady, so you don't overwhelm the biological filter...Don't get anymore neons for now...Start planning for the 55 that you want to get, and be ready to be patient...you might want to hold back on getting it for a bit, and make sure this is something you want to invest in...a 55 is a great investment, but, i'd hate to see you spend the money and get bored with it...just something to think on...Though with most of us it isn't getting bored that is the problem, it is the addiction, and the want to get an even bigger tank, while still keeping our small tanks...Best of luck, enjoy the fishies...I know neons are one of my favorites, I just put 20 of the into my 125 gallon, and am thinking I might want more ...Heidi"I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." I heat to break it to you, but 99% of the time it is a goner. Neons are very senasitive to water changes, and that one probably couldnt handle it. Call up the fish store you got them from and ask them what the pH is, then slowly change it to that, you might be able to save the rest of the neons. |

As far as that Tetra goes, I think we'll need some more info on the tank, but I think it's safe to say that's not normal. Any visible signs of distress?
