Well, maybe the title is a bit misleading, but I think I'm done with monster fish for a while. I'm 17, going away to college in a year, and I don't exactly make big bucks. Sooooo, someone came today to pickup my 90g setup-fish, sump, tank, etc. I'm sad to see it go, but nice to know the fish are going to a better place. I keep in contact with the guy regularly, so it's cool. Now, all I've got in my possession is a 38g growout and a measely 10g growout. I think the plan for the next few weeks is to relax and try to sell most of my fish. I want to setup a 75/90g semi planted tank. I want to get some relaxing fish-no more huge cats or monster cichla. Sooo, I think I may get the tank and a nice filter. For fish, I want to keep it classic: Angels (Altum or Scalara), cardinals, maybe some discus, pleco or two, etc.

Anyway, these posts basically allow me to collect my thoughts. Take them for what they are lol.

I feel for ya. I'm going to be cutting back *heavily* on my stock in the near future. Namely, later this year when I'm off to college.

You can have a 75/90 gal. tank with some Angels & some nice schools of Tetras & Corydoras. You have alot of species to choose from & you can also add a lovely BN.

Well, the plan is got get 3-5 Altums as a focal fish, and maybe 2-3 Discus of some sort. Then, I was a bunch of cardinals and a school of pandy cories. A pleco will round out the stock list.

Rather than make a new post, I want to ask a question. With this planned 90g, I was going to run an Eheim 2028, but do you think I'll be alright running a 2026?

sounds like you will be askin for trouble. altums and discus together . gorgeous fish, both nice centerpieces if they were in their own tanks or a much much larger tank. Also altum's have been known to be quite ridden with intestinal parasites and others, just asking for trouble with the discus.

Personally I would pick on or the other.

Also why are you setting up a tank if you are selling your fish to go to college? most college have size limitations on aquariums. Also if this tank is staying home can you trust the parents to care for it in your absence, especially if you decide to go with the discus.

I wouldn't even try this myself despite my experience with discus.

My dad's the one that got me into fish. He's been keeping fish for 30 something years. I'm more than confident he can take care of them in my absense.

This is basically the look I'm going for, only with much less livestock.

The Altums I've got my eye on have been in my care for nearly a month now. They are eating like pigs! Discus are coming from Discus Madness-a local discus breeder where I got my first bunch from about a year ago.

My main concern right now is the filter...

I think you should be ok with Discus and Angels.
I keep Discus and Angels together myself with no
troubles!
A good dewormer prior to putting them together
would be worthwhile just in case.

As for a filter, I would simply go for the biggest filter
you can get.
I run an Eheim 2217 (good for 175g) on my 75g tank,
in combination with a Fluval 204 (good for 40g).
The pair give me a turnover rate of about 8x per hour.
Try to get as close to 10x turnover rate that you can if possible. Eheim makes a good filter, but if you can go
for one of the Eheim Pros with an auto-prime system, you wont regret it. My Eheim took my 7 hours the first time to get it going. Took me 2 years to figure out how to get it going in under 30 minutes. They are a pain to get going if they dont have auto prime. They work great though.
Thats all I will say about that. *curses eheim filter again*

The 2028 is the Professional II series with that Push-To-Prime you're talking about. From what I've read, this is the real deal. I'm pretty excited with this guys. I'm getting the tank from a friend for basically nothing. He's in Europe for two weeks, so I'll have to wait until then.

I'm going to be extra careful this time. I'm going to have a 10g quarentene for all fish that enter the tank.
