After feeding the fish in my 40g i decided to just sit and watch, even though i have work to do!

i noticed my male neon rainbow flashing his fins at one of the females, they both then darted into the bogwood area of my tank, next think i see a cloud of eggs spread out around the fish.
this then turned into a feast for the rasbora and other rainbows. But how good i've had them for nearly 2 weeks and they are breding.

the next exciting thing my LFs hass had a shipment of very nice rummynose tetras which i love, but never had. the guy said i can have i good deal as i'm always there and i've just given him my single danio.

i just need to know
1) will rummynose be ok with livebearers? i'm thinking they would just checking.
2) most important is there room in my 20g?
3) if so how many can i get?? say 4 being minimum.

Rummynose will be fine with livebearers. However, I recommend that you have at least three (3) female swordtails to every male swordtail. Having fewer than a 3 to 1 ratio will have the male badgering the female to death. Oh, just one male swordtail per tank!

I would just say 2:1, but the same reasons. If you fix the ratios by adding more swordtails, you won't have enough room for the rummynoses. I would recommend at least 7 rummies for a school. They're very tight schooling fish. Four is definitely too few for them.

2:1 is nice, but 3:1 is better, imho. At least two ladies get a rest now and then

Congrats on the Tank.

Isn't if funny how you can come along at just the right moment. I came home for lunch one day and was only home for 20 minutes. I went to the basement to check on my fish and was only down there 5 minutes. Imagine that I could hit it just right. My new rasboras were inverting under some broad leaves and laying eggs. I watched in amazement as they inverted together, upside down under that leaf, and saw the male wrap his tail around the female and squeeze until the eggs popped out....right into the mouth of two other male rasboras right below. It was still exciting. If I hadn't seen those boys eating eggs, I would have thought they had worms. They had pretty white poops after that.

Thanks for the replies.

As for the ratio of swords. i've had them 2:1 for a very long time now and they all seem fine. the male also chases the female platies, so the ratio is more like 4:1.

Would 5 rummynoses be ok? i don't want to over do the tank, and i have now got 2 fry living in a net, i don't usually save them, but my girlfriend wanted me to this time.

20g
3 swordtails
2 platies
1 guppy - might go back to LFS or differant tank.
2 fry - probably swordtails
5 Rummynose tetra?

cheers shekoi.

I like to keep tetras in schools of six or more. So my answer is no to 5 teras and yes to 6 tetras.:%)

I missed the two female platies. Platies and swords are related and will interbreed. I think your male thinks he is in heaven!
