I recently added a dwarf gourami to my 2o gallon tank with 3 platties. I think I added him on monday, but all he ever tries to do is "get out" He just swims with his nose against the glass and goes up and down. Every once and awhile he will switch sides. It doesn't make for a very interesting fish.

i have found that if u have the lights off when u added him, the next few days he should begin to get use to you. but try not to make alot of noise by the tank, or fast, sharp movements like turning on the light so fast, and it would help if u sat infront of the tank for awhile. and try and keep the tank upkeep as little as possible. no nets, or wc for awhile, so he builds up trust.

ive found that gouramis can sometimes take a long time to get used to their tank, especially with boisterous tankmates. my pearl gourami was too afraid to eat what i fed him for the first 3 weeks, and would eat all the algae in my tank when i wasnt around. but now hes not at all afraid of me or eating anymore.

Yeah, my DG is still getting used to the new tank, he's been in for about a month! He's a good likkle fishy though and eats the algae(there's plenty ). He's got great colors though, maybe it's because he has some pretty feisty tankmates.

Your answer depends on several things, including the new fish added is it shy or outgoing, the make up of the tank hiding places, other fish in the tank, is it by its self or is there a school it can join into, or one aggresive fish controlling the tank.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

It's better to keep the lights off when you add fish in your tank.

i Have had this fish for 4 years now and the best way to add them is with the lights off. Is what u got a single male or female or more than one. If it is only one on its own i have found that manly in males they will keep doing this for 1-2 monthes or if u want him to stop realy soon add one more dwarf gourami. (if male add female and if female add male) This does not happen so much in females. Have you tried feeding live food to the gourami/gouramis this also helps to carm dwarfs down. Hope this helps

Its one of those things- that youre not supposed to do - but sometimes it helps. If you have a fish thats new and going into a tank you will find that your typical LFS generally underfeeds the fish, so sometimes offering a little food sets them off on a feeding rampage, and before they really realise that they were all stressed from moving they have eaten , been around the tank a bit, and hey presto, they seem to forget to worry about it.

Notably you should only do this if you are very rigourous with the bagging and making sure that there is no issues with temperature shock,as this could make digesting the food problematic. Obviously this works best with the greedier species.
