Due to the recent death of one of my Panda Cories, I am heading off to buy a couple more tomorrow. However, before I did, I wanted to see if it would be possible for me to get a trio instead of just a pair...

Here is the info about my tank...
- 20 gallon (tall)
- Ammonia, Nitrite = 0
- Nitrate = between 10-20
- Filtration: a TopFin 20 and a Penguin Bio-Wheel 125

The current inhabitants of my tank are a pair of Cherry Barbs, 6 Harlies and now 4 Panda Cories.

Originally there were 6 Pandas, however, one died shortly after arriving home and the other just died last night. (Visit the Hospital for more info about that one.)

So, am I best off to only get 2 more Pandas or is it possible that I could get 3 more?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you can afford 4, get them. And watch them come alive

I'd say you have room for 4 more Pandas. And they'll love you for getting the extra companions

Calilasseia, could the Panda deaths be attributed to what I ran into. I know a 20 tall isn't as tall as a 29 gallon hexagon, but do you think it contributed? If so maybe Pandas aren't the right choice for this tank. Just a thought.

the 29hex tank has a smaller surface area than the 20 tall possbily, leading to less oxygen exchange at the surface.

Actually, I had a problem with the height of my tank. The Pandas I had didn't do very well at all because of it, and eventually all died. I tried to put some "stepping stones" in with them but it didn't work. I was just wondering if maybe that was neurotica1983 problem to begin with, and if it was then maybe getting more Pandas wasn't a good idea. I was asking Calilasseia as he was the one who helped me with that problem.

Ah ... that puts an interesting complexion on things ... thanks for reminding me Jessnick ...

Hmm. Might be interesting to compare notes here. So this Panda aquarium is 20 inches tall? Hmm. Perhaps the fact that mine have always been in fairly shallow aquaria (12 inches in the case of the infamous Panda Fun Palace&#8482 has helped in my case.

Measure the actual water depth from the surface to the gravel. If that water depth is less than 18 inches, then the aquarium could still be OK. Over 18 inches, and it might be time to consider introducing some features into the aquarium that can act as 'ledges' and 'launch pads' for the Pandas if they don't already exist.

Although my Pandas only need to come up for air in order to keep the gut healthy, and don't need to do this to actually respire (they shouldn't need to with the water changes they get, not to mention the powerhead I'm using) they don't have to travel too far to reach the surface. This might be a factor to consider. It might even be worth conducting experiments to see if Pandas prefer a shallower depth if gven a choice. of course, if we had access to someone who could give us collecting data from the wild, and tell us what depths they occupy in their native rivers, this would be of enormous assistance, but until I can afford the expedition to Peru I've been planning for years, that will have to wait
