I saw a beautiful fish today in the new LFS I visted in Victoria, and it was not labelled, nor for sale, it was in a display tank. Neither of the people working knew what it was, as it is not their tank, and the owner wasnt in.
Heres what it looked like:
Body shape like a Croscheilus Siamensis
Top of head to about mid-body brilliant emerald green iridescent
Long Black Stripe from nose tip to base of tail
Red stripe starting at mid-body to base of tail, above black line
Scissor Tail type tail with a black tip with a bright yellow spot in the very end , rest of tail silver
One pair of whiskers under mouth, mouth resembled that of a RTBS
I would love to know what he is, he was being kept in a planted tank with Neons and Harle's.
Thanks.

Sounds like a Denisoni Barb (Barbus Puntilius). As a matter of fact I'll lay money on it.

To me the most beuatiful FW fish around. A school of these in a planted tank is breathtaking. I've been raving about them for a while. They have been available here in Asia for a while but are just starting to show up in the West.

Did it look anything like this:

Thats it!
Thanks guys!!
Are they schoolers? This one was all alone!
I remember they had "Denisons Barb" listed on a tank that was empty with price of 16.99 each. Good Price? Thats about 14.00 USD

Yep, they're shoaling fish like most other barbs (I don't really count cherry barbs), and do best in groups of at least six or so. They are pretty danged expensive because of high demand and low supply, since they've been discovered only recently. $14 U.S. is a pretty good deal, I've been hearing of prices exceeding $30 U.S.

They are a beautiful fish. I've been thinking of a school of them in a 55 gallon I'm currently setting up, but the cost is still pretty high it seems. However, at a size of 6" not sure this size tank would be adequate for their swimming needs.

Probably not. I think that 75 gallons is a good minimum size for these fish, seeing as they are active swimmers like most other barbs. A shoal of six inch barbs would be a little cramped in a 55.

Well there's good news and there's bad news (sorta).....

You will find these fish become more widely available and cheaper as time goes on. While no aquarium breedings have been recorded the better fish farms here in Asia have discovered how to breed them and they are now becoming available in decent numbers and as a result prices are dropping So expect to see these beauties more often (don't want to rub it in but I can't resist - I can pick these up here for $1 a piece ). As a side note to that, this fish was on the endangered species list until recently but is now off the list. I wonder if that may be due to the fact that they can now be bred in captivity and the wild stock is being left alone, possibly an example of how the hobby can actually help the environment

The sorta bad news. They are quite big and they are very very tight schoolers and very active swimmers, they do need a large tank. As I've said I love these fish but having seen them in large planted tanks I just don't feel they'd be happy in my 65gal, so I have to pass them up at the moment. I agree with books, nothing less then a 75g and a minimum of 6.

If you are lucky enough to have a large well planted tank (they need a lot of oxygen) grab them. They are quite simply stunning in this environment, the only fish I've seen that can seriously rival marine fish coloration. To keep too few or in too small or bare a tank is doing neither them or yourself justice. In the right setting these fish are simply the most stunning FW fish available and they will reward you handsomely with a display that will be the envy of all, pictures don't even start to show the gorgeousness of these fish.

Yes I like them

Bensaf, did you just say $1 each. I am in India, and I still have to pay upwards of $2 to get them. They are Indian fish as well.

And I agree, they are very active schoolers, so you need a big tank for them. They love all the space they can get.

Well Denison Babrs are very nice but quite expensive schoolers. They should be kept in schools of around 6 (which isn`t very achievable with the price tag). It seems reasonable price for you as for me it would be £15 for 1 and that converts to be around $30 US if my exchange rate is correct. I recommend you buy them up ASAP. People like to keep them with Discus as they are peaceful and beautiful and also can show when water conditions aren`t as good I presume with colours fading.

Well, I think this fish would be an excellent replacement fish for my Bala Sharks.
I am going to call the pet store and ask them to put some on hold for me.

6 it is then.
I am going to start up both my 10g tanks soon, and this will reduce the bioload and stocking in my 75g substantially.
I am going to do a 10g with Neons and White Clouds, and the other will be I dont know what yet. I was thinking I might try my female sailfin in there for a short time to see if she will give birth. To this date, in the year and a half I have had her, I havent seen one baby. I would like to get some!
If not, I will be raising either some baby discus or baby angels in there.
Could one spawn a pair of pearl gourami in a 10g? Like just to the eggs hatch?
Anyway,
I will try to get 6 Denisoni's.

Sneaky_pete-
Yes, it is possible to spawn pearl gouramis in a ten. Fifteen or twenty gallons would be better, but a ten would be workable. You would certainly need to remove the parent fish after spawning, and avoid disturbing the bubblenest.

Heidi-
You’re in the Houston area, which means that there are plenty of other fishkeepers on the hunt for the torpedo barbs. I don’t remember any really good stores over there that would get the fish in, and any that did would sell out very quickly. I think your best hopes in buying these fish lie in the Internet or a fish club. Aquabid would be a good place to check for these fish. They don’t have any available now, but you should look often. Good things pop up over there every once in a while.
