I have often seen this fish at the LFS but I am not sure what it is. It has a grey/silverish body with stripes on the second half. The shape is like that of an arowana, but the mouth is different. It stays on the top of the tank. The slightly larger specimens seemed to get a red fringe on their fins. I have seen this fish as small as an inch and a half.

No, very different. The jaw is also like that of the Arowana, but doesnt have those fork like things protruding. The stripes are vertical and not horizontal across the second half of the body.

A Panchax Killie maybe?

Can you narrow it down to a specific group of fish at least? What did the fins look like? We don't have much information to go by.

Is it Epiplatys dageti by any chance?

With you mentioning stripes concentrated on the rear half of the body, I was somewhat perplexed until Cory_Addict pointed me at Killies ...

This species appears in various population colour forms - Epiplatys dageti monroviae being the one most popularly kept by Killie specialists.

This isn't the only Epiplatys species that exhibits bands upon the rear half of the body, but to my knowledge this is the one that exhibits them most conspicuously. A search on the Genus Epiplatys could prove fruitful. They're African Killies, tend to like slightly acidic, soft water, and the bigger species should not be trusted with small fishes. Smaller ones, on the other hand, include a particular favourite of mine, the Rocket Panchax, Epiplatys anullatus, which has a tail that looks just like a rocket flame, hence the name!

Looked a lot like the Panchax Killie. Same shape, vertical stripes, silver body, not as much red on the fins though, but that could be because I saw specimens that were like a little over an inch. The LFS person called it something like the Panchax. The shape of the mouth is similar too.

I would have to say it was a Panchax, unless there are other species that look similar???
