Dilemma, dilemma, dilemma! I have been busting my butt working on my new 300 gallon tank. I planned on putting the fish in last Sunday but during the weekend I discovered BGA. Don't know how I could get it but I did buy plants online, plus I used some of my plants from my 120 & 40 gallon tanks. So I treated with marayn. Today, Thursday is my last treatment.

So, my dilemma, last night my daughter and her husband come over for dinner. My son-in-law is checking out the new tank and he asks me, and I quote: "What are all these little fry in here?" I said, what are you tanking about? He says, you have a bunch of little fish in here. Low & behold, 15 - 20 fry, from what we can count, and swimming through my un-cycled, medicated, 300 gallon tank. I have no idea what they are. They are swimming in the upper middle water level and some are at the top. I have fry food called "Firsts Bites", it's a powder. I put some in and they started eating right away.

I'm thinking that they could possibly be Blue Ram fry. I took my Anabas plant from my 40 and put it into the 300. My Rams always spawned on this plant. Maybe they had eggs and I missed them. Also, I have small Rainbows and Tetras in my 120, maybe a plant had eggs from there. I fed again today. I have to decide what to do with the fry. I was planning on adding my main fish this Tuesday, but I must catch the fry and set up a tank for them before moving the fish in.

What a dilemma!

Use a really big net!
Or could you wait for them to grow a bit before adding the main fish? I realize the tank is medicated but the meds can be used with fish in right? You could run carbon to get the meds out and add some conditioner and bacterial starter. Then let the babies break in the new tank. What are the main fish to be? Sorry if you already said I was reading too fast for my brain again.
If fry showed up in my tank I'd be dancing for joy!

Okay, so I moved about 20 of them into a 10 gallon tank. There are more but tomorrow is another day. They seem to be doing well but I have no idea what they are. The possibilities are Blue Rams, Dwarf Neon Rainbows, Celebese Rainbows, Rosy Tetras, Black Skirt Tetras, Head & Tail Tetras or Cherry Barbs.
They are not Corys, Gouramis or Clown Loaches (don't I wish). Oh, they could also be Bolivian Rams.

spyder,

First of all I envy you for your tank, 300G

And next I would say that this is a nice dilemma to have, an extra set of tiny babies. I can’t wait either to find out who was “the culprit”.

Does this mean that your future main fish are crowded into smaller tanks right now? In that case I guess they could stay there until you have most of the fry out, maybe increasing the water change frequency in these tanks might help (if needed).

Have fun,

Well, I got about 15 more out today. I really, really, really thing they are Tetras. They would either be Rosy tetras, Skirt Tetras or Head & Tail Tetras. Time will tell.

My Corys spawned on Friday morning. There were a mound of eggs on one leaf so I removed the leaf and put the eggs into the fry tank. They should be wigglers on Monday.

I have 9 tanks and I am braking down a bunch including a 120, 40, 30 & two 20's. The fish going into the tank will eat fry so fast it's not funny. I hope to have all the fry out by Tuesday, That's when a few fish will be put into the 300. After today I don't see any more fry but I'm sure a few more will pop up.

Congratulations for all the spawning's that you are having.
For sure, you're going a great job & your fish are more than happy.
Just keep us informed about the fry.

Okay, I really, really, really think that the fry are Melanotaenia praecox, Dwarf Neon Rainbows.

Congrats! And yes soon enough you will be able to tell what they are. But... what are you going to do with them?

I've given up on having plants I'm just terrible with them it seems, aquatic and otherwise, lol. They seem to do nothing but die and bring all sorts of algae and what not to my tanks =p

Once they are big enough. probably 1", I'll put them into my 300 gallon tank. I have 10 Dwarf Neon Rainbows in my 120 that will be going into the 300, this will give me a nice large active school of them.
