The problem is getting the stores to agree and do the research. I can't count the amount of times I've argued over the adult size of various fish even with fairly knowledgeable people at the lfs. Especially on pleco sizes. Then even if people agree on the size of the fish they still have to agree on what size tank it can go in. There aren't really standards only the experience and opinions of various people.

How many of you are familiar with the little signs that they have at places like Disney Land, Six Flags, etc. They say, "If you are not this tall (with a line across to mark the height), you can not ride this ride."
Could similar signs be made with pictures of fish standing on their tail fins with lines showing how big they get, and "if you buy me, you can't put me in anything smaller than a -- list tank size."
Some of them out there, still won't get it, but some might. At least the ones who have been to Disney Land -- perhaps.
I do think you are on the right track.

hey all fishie lovers....i so agree with ya all, but i think the problem is more basic than that. If people would respect life more, than it doesn.t really matter initially how big the tank is or whatever. They would do research and learn how to take care of them properly.....
I lived in Germany for a while where it is illegal to euthanize animals except for terminal illness or visciousness.
They even have minimum standards for animal living conditions that are better than for children.

The problem (besides used tanks) is that it's really not the size of the fish that's the biggest problem, it's overstocking! I could have one 10 inch fish in my 45 gallon, maybe not *ideal* but not a bad situation.

However 2 or 3 or 4 10" fish would be disasterous, and there's no way the store would know what I had in the tank already unless they implemented some sort of tracking program, and then how would you prove fish death? It would just be way to Big Brother.

However, I do agree that it's a problem. If I worked in a fish store (or even though I don't) I would/do warn people of the sizes fish will reach. I convinced a lady at Petco once not to buy a 2" common plec for her 10 gallon.

"What about the people who build there own tanks or who buy a used tank."

if it is second hand it should have a certificate already if it is self built you must show a photo with a rule or tape measure clearly showing the dimentions of the tank. then for a small fee a shop could issue you a certificate!!

i agree totally, and maybe the employees should be put on a crash course before they begin working and if they fail the test they are not allowed to work in that shop, then maybe the lfs's would be full of people like those on this site, people who actually know what their talking about

"But many of the employees don't know that the fish they're selling will outgrow that tank. Perhaps they should"

It is sad to say but it is true

But many of the employees don't know that the fish they're selling will outgrow that tank. Perhaps they should, but I'm not sure an unofficial lisensing program is the way to change the system.
