I went to my LFS today to get some gravel for the 10 that I was planning on switching over from sand and going to plant. As well as the gravel, I came home with a 20 long.

Any stocking ideas? I want something different. (no tetras, barbs, livebearers)

Steph

Try some bottom feeders.

corys, yoyo loaches (you will probably be able to get away with 3 of them in a 20l) kuhlii loaches are great too

What about a pair of dwarf gouramis, rams, are you going for a school of something or just 1-2 bigger fish?

go with cichlids...they are awsome!!!

Also Steph, I wanted to tell you, you were not a bad, bad girl...what would have been bad is if you had brought home a 125, and forgotten the gravel--Heidi

I know you said no Tetras, but how 'bout a school of
Congo Tetras. These are no ordinary Tetras.

Rainbowfish! Killifish! Small L-number plecs! Wild betta species!

Also, I second the congo tetras. Dull as youngsters, they get very beautiful and eyecatching with age! Not your average, tiny and darty tetra.

I have 5 dwarf neon rainbowfish (also called praecox rainbowfish) and I have absolutely fallen in love with them. The bodies are an incredible iridescent silver that reflects every color of the rainbow (especially in natural light), and the males have red fins while the females have yellow (so sexing couldn't be easier). I have a few water quality issues I am fixing up in my tank currently but once all is stable I plan on getting maybe one more male and 3-4 more females.

Another option would be to set up a chilchid tank, focusing on some of the smaller species. Never had chichilds myself so can't comment on them, but some of them are truly striking when I see them in the store.

my idea would be
4 kuhli loaches
1 rubbernose plec
2 nannacara anomala (dwarf cichlid)
1 pearl gourami

that's a nice mix of size, habit, and all within a nice gradient of colour from gold to red (depending on plec)

I've been poking around looking at Apistogrammas. like this one in particular http://www.apistogramma.com/cms/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=132&Itemid=44
I have a friend that breeds them and am going to see what he has for stock.

Steph

Those are lovely fish. Are they very common at fish stores or do you usually have to know someone who breeds them to acquire them?

I've never seen them in stores, but then the stores I go to never have anything but the ordinary stuff. I'm sure they could be special ordered though.
