My father gave me an old 29g he had laying around his house. He has yet to bring me the stand or hood though, but he did bring over the filter.
Do you think the filter is worth trying or should I just get a brand new one? I remember it being used when I was little, but I don't know how old it is. The top of the filter says Secondnature Whisper Power Filter, and the power supply on the bottom says Model No. 2B. Does anyone know when it was made?
There isn't any substrate so I'd also like suggestions on that as well as stock and plants(easy ones please ) if anyone would like to assist me

go to a lfs and get all new stuff. if the tank is bad, then some lfs have kits with all the works. replace it, but if the tank is fine, just get new stuff.

Lucky you, and I thought I was lucky to get a 10 gallon:%) If you don't get a hood there are many ways to make or create your own hood for a lot cheaper than the ones you can buy...Congratulations heidi michelle

get a new filter. If the thing does work you may be hard pressed to find the proper filter cartridges/media for it. If you can't get the hood there are many thing s that can be done, cut glass, plexi, wood canopies etc. good luck in your new hobby

Whisper 2's aren't ancient dinosaurs (i still have one running on my 29) and is most likely in fine shape. Test it out to make sure it works and flows well. If it does, there is absolutely no need to purchase a new filter.

If it's been dry for a while, i urge you to test the seals in a location where you don't mind getting wet if it leaks. A flat surface with newspapers spread out beneath the tank works just fine. Fill it slowly, and check for leaks and any wet paper. If after 24 hours the paper is still dry, you're good to go.

As far as stocking, that's up to you, whatever you like! I'd suggest a nice thicket of some easy-to-gro anacharis, a few crypt. wendtii, some corkscrew or straight val, a few pieces of well placed driftwood stocked with harlequin rasboras, checkered barbs and a few emperor tetras, cories and maybe an upside down cat or two

I couldn't get the filter to work, may have put it together wrong though, I do that sometimes. I don't have the box or instructions. Filter reccomendations anyone?
I will certainly test the tank before I set it up.
Thanks for all your suggestions.
I was thinking of angels or something else that's very beautiful but I'm not really sure.
--------
I think I want to try a sand substrate. Will this have any effect on what sort of filter I can use ?
With the pair of angels (or similar fish) could I also have some bottom feeders such as cories or small loaches?
Thanks
