I was at a pet store today that I go to fairly frequently, not because their quality is good (it isn't), but because they always seem to have some sort of fish in that they have no idea about the identity.

So today when I went there on my way back from school, I found some ultra-cool fish in a tank way in the back. They were labled as "Rummynose Tetras", but they are obviously some Rasbora species. They were going to sell me them at the regular Rummynose price ($2.25 each), but since they kind of know me there (LFS employees around here all seem to visit each other's stores a lot) and the fish were a bit emaciated, so they knocked off 75¢ from each fish. I got four of them, which was all they had.

In terms of physique, the fish are very typical members of the Rasbora genus, with upturned mouths and an elongated body. It is their color that is unusual, and they look like no other Rasbora have seen before. They have dark silver (if that makes sense) bodies, with red heads and red spots on both lobes of the caudal fin. They were pretty much just plain silver when I bought them, and it looks like they still have a lot of coloring up to do.

Here are the pictures (sorry they're so crappy)...

Actually, you're exactly right. The common name of the species, as they are marked when we order them, is "Asian Rummy Nosed Tetra", sawbwa resplendens.

Awesome... Have any info on them?

I read that in the wild they often times come from polluted waters, so they must be pretty hardy.

This is the first I've ever seen or heard of them.

I do not know much about them...they are printed on the stocking list about once per month, and are fairly drab following arrival. But they color up brilliantly afterwards. I had a few for a week or two, but they were promptly returned, as they turned out to be a bit too nippy for my kryptopterus. Taking a wild stab in the dark given limited experience, they should be quite hardy, as most rasbora are.
