Ahh, that'd make sense NC. I mean, its odd that we are being environmentally responsible, but maybe that is a good part of the reason Thanks heaps for that info

i live in the uk - crap weather - but no problem getting the kinds of fish your talking about. anyway im not sure about aus but the reason zebra plecs are so expensive and rare here is that the brazilian government has banned exports of zebra plecs and a lot of other plecs due to over fishing for the aquatics trade. i do however believe that there will be farm raised fish available soon as so many fish farms will be breeding them to supply the trade, they are not hard to breed and this kind of thing has happened with plecs before ie farlowella were amazingly expensive when first introduced

Opiate,
You obviously didn't get the message the first time or chose to ignore it.

THERE WILL BE NO DEALINGS IN ILLEGAL GOODS ON THIS SITE.

Ask the question again and this thread will have to be closed.

Aqis is being stubborn.

they are just sitting on it as far as I know.

Possibly part of what is holding it up is the carnivorous nature of the fish?

Sorry guys, I don't think you got the hint there.

THERE WILL BE NO DEALINGS IN ILLEGAL GOODS ON THIS SITE.

Clearer?

Pirahnas are considered noxious in Victoria as declared in the Fisheries Act 1995, and for good reason too.

If you insist on this ill-advised course of action, you should do it privately.

(in the instance of zebra plecs, if they are locally bred they are permissable as they are not declared noxious and are quite legal to sell providing you can say for sure that you got them from a local source)

If your state allows for a licence, this may be a better way to go.

I am certainly not wanting the x000 fine. The site owner doesn't want it and I'm pretty certain the other members of the site wouldn't like to pay it either.

It is fine to dicuss the ins and out of fish law and how it affects you, but actually dealing in prohibited fish is not on, K?

Mango-One of the Aquariums is Subscape Aquarium, they are in Melbourne, the phone number is (03) 9427 0050. I can't remember how much they were there but there was lots of them. The place they were $100, I can't remember where it was or what it was called, but it was somewhere round Bayswater or Boronia, just out of Melbourne.

I have seen about 6 zebra plecs in a shop in sydney (shop is currently under watch by AQIS according to rumours), never spotted puffers though, however when i asked rather loudly on a different forum for them, I was contacted by a supplier within a few weeks.

Now, as much as I wanted them, A) the supplier had me over a barrel price-wise as there is little to no competition and B) If I got caught I'd not have been happy. For all I know AQIS had finally caught on and planned a sting.

Plus there are people selling baby toadfish as dwarf puffers, so do be careful of that one.

Don't be so gung-ho about this. AQIS officers know how to use the internet and i'm sure that they glance over the forums every now and again to try to catch the suspect traders. Yes, their hands are tied in many respects and yes they aren't perfect (a large unsolicited bag of beans somewhere in the work cupboard is proof of that! I almost choked when that showed up!) BUT if you go around broadcasting it, they are probably going to notice, and they are unlikely to just sit back and let people deal in black market fish so blatantly)

Personally, I would advise against dealing in illegal fish (and would beat the tripe out of anyone dealing in noxious fish - sorry, but I kinda like our native fish!)

BUT if you choose to go down that path, don't be a dope about it. Think it through, DON'T BROADCAST IT and don't let any supplier get you stuck in a corner. Make sure there is always option to walk away, no strings, as at some point you will probably realise that it is indeed too much risk.

Heck, I have legal imported fish dropping dead on me, I can't even begin to imagine how crappy i'd feel if i went to the trouble of securing an illegal import only to have it drop dead of some unknown disease, or worse still, BRING IN some unknown disease that wipes out the rest of my stock!

Its just a really big risk to take, and IMO isn't worth it.

Plus, lets not forget the whole illegal thing.

There have been people in Australia trying to get Zebra Plecs for importing now for over 3 years, AQIS keeps rejecting the form. I dont know why...

Imagine Zebra Plecs @ Sailfin plec prices...aprox $50/fish

Hello,

I was just wondering why clown knife fish, pirana's, zebra-golden plecos and heaps of other catfish are illegal in Aus, especially in Victoria!
I was also wondering if people can actually get a hold of these fish in Aus, if so how much?

Just a Question, why are Zebra plecos illegal to import?

for all you people who don't know - Adf's & Dwarf puffers arn't allowed in Australia I think. Im saying this just to let you know, when I was thinking of how to stock my 5g (20ltr) tank I was all hyped up about pufferfish & froggies - sorry but you can't get them ... pity...

I should move back to USA or New Zealand... They might have there (well def. in us)

*cough*

I dont really have the space at the moment, or experience with agressive fish (most agressive i have is a convict and an oscar). They seem cool, but i bet id get over them pretty quick.

Just to let you know that if you get caught with piranhas then i guess your in for alot of trouble. Impossible to find in any retail shop and if you do see them instore then the manager is pretty stupid...i know if you get caught instore...over $10,000 fine, closure of store and in jail. Same if you keep them as pets. But, they usually go for approx. $550-$600 privately for adults.

Be warned! If you go plan to keep these fish...dont tell anyone.
