Red tail black shark!

i Went to my LFS yesturday after three more glowlights for my 10g to make the shoal up to 6. i also wanted something for my 40g

i asked on this site if i could have more angels and got a mixed responce, i asked at LFS and they advised against more angels as mine has been on his own for 2 years and is nearly fully grown, so i asked what fish would be suitable, after short discussion i went for a redtail shark, which i've always wanted just never had one.

so i would now like info on this fish please?

do you think he would be ok?

1 large angel
7 H. Rasbora
4 dwarf Neon rainbows
7 Corys
1 clown Pleco
1 Redtail Shark
1 otto

I had a Red tail shark earlier with tetras, angels and gouramis and he never did anything to the other fish.
Some of them can be really aggressive and some none aggressive.
Just see how he will do with the other fish

Uhhmm a good question..i really dont know but i dont think they grow that fast.It grows to about 6 inches and is tolerant of pH variations.
Mine was not growing at all because when i bought him it seems like that he was stunted.
I have heard some bad things about this sharks but i think it depends on the fish you get, hopefully yours is a good guy

As always, it depends on the personality of the individual fish. They definitely can't be kept with another RTBS though.

I have a 30g setup similar to your tank: neons, a paradise fish, cories, BN, and a RTBS. The shark has never bothered any of the other fish. They do like some sort of cave or hiding place. Since I bought mine some time ago it has shared a rock cave with my BN without problems.

I wouldn't say they're fast growers. Being small (young) might be to your advantage as the shark will grow up used to the other fish are him/her.

Another benefit that I never realized until I bought mine is that they're algae eaters. Not as effective as otos but they still help.

Good luck, they're very beautiful fish

I have a rainbow shark. I know not the same fish but very close. I used to have mine in a 20g tank with tiger barbs and he picked on everyone. One day I got fed up with him and stuck him in my 55g with a pair of convicts, pleco, giant danios, and rainbows. For the most part this has been a much better set up for him. This fish needs a lot of swimming room and they seem to do better. Every once in a while I still have problems with him. He tends to pick on my female con. and sometimes the danios and rainbows. Keep a close eye on yours and make sure he has plenty of hiding spots.
