I am stocking my 10 gallon aqauarium with new fish, I only have a small pleco in it right now. I would like to get many neons, I will get plenty of plants so I heard I can have around 15 neons? Also I will have about 5 ghost shrimp but I don't think they matter with the stocking of the aquarium since they are small and not much waste producers.

I would like to know if this is alright? and if not any other suggestions.

Also wut kind of gravel should I buy I was thinking of this very fine gravel like sand. Would it be ok with the plants, pleco and neons?

Thanks.

What type of pleco? I personally think that is to many neons for that 10 gallon.

I forgot wut type of pleco it is but its small 2" and very dark coloured. I know it will eventually grow out the 10 gallon but I have a 40 gallon I can put it in so im not worried about that.

About the neons I have actually heard I can successfully keep 20 neons in a 10 gallon with lots of plants(maybe without the pleco).

Wut about the gravel?

Not saying it cannot be done but 20 neons would be pushing the limit a bit too far. If you had every thing perfect and very regular maintenance I still think it would be too much.

May be 10 neons and two otos and then that would be the maximum with no room for any errors.

As for the gravel go for a natural fine gravel easy to look after and very good for plants, it is always easy on the eye as some of those coloured graves are very distraction in a small tank. That is a personal opinion.

The neons will stand out very well in a heaverly planted natural looking tank.

For plants, plecos or the neons is fine gravel like sand alright for them?

Maybe the plecos will not like the fine gravel?

Fine Gravel is not very good for Plants, as it can crush the roots.
The Pleco will outgrow the 10gal. tank & as Keith said, 20 Neons is alot for your tank. It's better to stay a bit understocked & go with 12/15 Neons.

i say...u may move the pleco now to ur bigger tank...and i dont think 20 will live happily in such a small tank...its better to lower the number...say 10-12(max) for mor swimming space..this is already maxed ur tank...and u have to perform regular water change to keep it clean. as for substrate... colored ones r just fine...as long as its not a fine gravel.

Personallly I think a dark color gravel looks best in a planted 10g. I usually like the lighter gravel in bigger tanks, but all the 10s with darker gravel just seem to look better.

Sorry for the confusion I was not refering to sand but a substrate of gravel 3-4mm.

Very fine gravel/sand can cause a variety of problems. It compacts down crushing plants roots and can create anaerobic pockets that release toxic gas into the water. It's also harder to keep clean because you can't stick the gravel vac all the way down into the sand without sucking it all out. Gravel is much easier to keep clean but I do love the look of sand.
Here's some ghost shrimp info:
