Ah, in that case, IMO the height does add something, but not much. In no way can you house as many fish in a 40 gallon tall that you mention that you can in a 40 gallon long. However, such a 40 gallon tall still holds more fish than a 20 gallon long.

Of course, just my opinion.:%)

I was thinking along the lines of stocking.
Like a 40 gallon tall holding more than a 20 gallon long, even if the footprint is the same. I was also thinking of the different level thing.

Depending on the stock, it can be. 1' is fine for many fish such as your common small schoolers. 1.5' should keep you good if you're not keeping any fish that gets over a foot long. Past 2' in depth, any extra height is moot to most common aquarium fish.

Most fish do not spend much time traveling vertically. The only examples I can think of are marine fish that swim vertically during spawning. Nautilus travel hundreds of feet in depth upwards every night. However, neither of these cases are hobbyist ones, so we needn't concern ourselves.

Height in what, an aquarium? If that is your question, then abosolutely not as for some fish angels is a good example when a tall tank is needed. Also, in a community aquarium when you may have fish that occupy different levels of the tank, then height also could be important.
