After 30 years away from collecting tropical fish I acquired a 45g tank in the summer of '04 and added a 55g a year ago -(the 45g has a large uaru, 2 large angels and a school of cories, while the 55g has 4 koi angels, 3 velvet swords, a school of cardinal tetras and a school of cories), am I nuts to be thinking about getting rid of these two tanks in favor of a 75 or 90 gallon tank or is this a normal progression -

It only gets worse! It is a little something called MTS.

IMHO, adding the 3rd tank and not getting rid of the other two is the natural progression! Its called multi tank syndrome.
Seriously though, if you are going to get rid of the 45 & 55, are you going to get rid of the stock you have and start from scratch or combine the tanks?
The 75 and 90 are the same length as the 55 but about 6" wider. If it was me I would go for a 6' tank (100 gal or larger).

I just got a 46 gal tank from walmart (my first over 20). I just hope I dont want more and more fishtanks too, my landlord wouldn't be to happy with me... Anyway, you will always want more tanks and bigger tanks but thats good coz' fish are cool.

If you have the $$ and space go as big as you can. I wish I would have went bigger. Right now I am running with 2-55G, 1-40G, and 1-20G. I really would like something wider than 12 inches.

Doedogg has a good point with her question about your plans with the other tanks. This will truly tell if you have MTS or just want an upgrade.
