Just Some Pictures of Fishies - Fresh | |
LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | Gang, During a short vacation last week, I made a visit to the Riverhead Aquarium on Long Island. I took about 250 pictures of fishies, most of them from the dark side. These can be found in the General Marine section, in a thread named "Just Some Pictures of Fishies". When it was time to focus on freshwater fish I ran out of storage space on my camera as well as time, the family decided that "we had seen enough" . So here are just a few shots of the freshwater section, I hope you will enjoy them. To begin, a Piranha: Piranha |

LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | Next I came across a tank that was smaller than my 125G and housed one fish, an electric eel. He was all by himself, I guess that it is not such a surprise given that he is a real shocker . He was about 2 to 3 feet long. Eel |

Here is a shot that shows a good half of the total size of this aquarium, loaded with fishies: Africans I |

LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | I have no idea on how they manage to maintain water quality for such a large number of fish in a rather small space, neither do I know how they curb aggression (in the top right section is a small fight between 2 of them going on). LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | He also didn't like me taking pictures of him, as you can see by the look that he gave me, saying "what are you looking at?" He spent all the time defending a small part of a rock and got pretty rough with anybody who tried to get there. Fish Details II |

LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | Next are a few fishies in this tank that I have no idea on what they are, maybe you want to ID them for future reference. Unknown I |

LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | Here is another one that I don't know, but although he is mostly golish/brown I found him rather attractive. The spot pattern on his sides and the lighter fin coloration makes this one stand out from the mass. Unknown II |

LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | There were a few fish in that tank that seemed to me to be some albino breed, totally white or white with some blue spots. Is that natural or a captive breed? On top of it, they reminded me more of Koi than Cichlids. Unknown III |

I am new to African cichlids though, so I can't be sure. It definitely looks like a Hap instead of a Mbuna....but what do I know. I like the picture of the Electric Yellow especially...hope to have me a group of them soon! edited: because i'm dumb sometimes... |

LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | Thanks for the comment, GirlieGirl Yeah, me not knowing the species shows how little I know about African Lake Cichlids , you should check my thread in the Marine Section with pictures of fishies from the dark side. I pretty much got none right there . Thanks again, Ingo |

Wingsdlc Fish Guru What is this? Posts: 2332 Kudos: 799 Registered: 18-Jan-2005 | Very nice pictures LF. Did you take hundreds to get only a few good ones? I tried to take some pictures at the aquariums while I was on my honeymoon but most of them you have no idea what they are. As for the African Cichlid tanks. The more fish you can cram in the better you are off for agression issues. It is harder for the dominate fish to take out the weeker individual if he can not single him out. #2 is a hap venustus: the picture below is a colored up male. Yours is probably a female. Looking at your first two pictures you have a nice male in thoughs shots. http://crazyravr.smugmug.com/photos/61242078-L.jpg #3 we have at work but I can't remember their name. Were there any planted tanks? 19G Container Pond [IMG]http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y118/Wingsdlc/Ric |

Calilasseia *Ultimate Fish Guru* Panda Funster Posts: 5496 Kudos: 2828 Votes: 731 Registered: 10-Feb-2003 | Concur - unknown #1 is a Dimidiochromis compressiceps, and #2 is a juvenile Nimbochromis venustus ... incidentally there's a full grown adult in the group shots, it's the big green blotched fish The very blue fish looks like an Aulonocara species to me, possibly an all-blue morph of stuartgranti ... zoom in on the head area and if it has enlarged sensory pores, then that's the giveaway, as all Aulonocara species have them for homing in on creatures buried in sand. |

GirlieGirl8519 Fish Master *Malawi Planter* Posts: 1468 Kudos: 1029 Votes: 35 Registered: 25-Mar-2005 | Could it be Aulonocara stuartgranti (Chirwa Is.) Calilasseia...for the very blue fish? Looks similar. Peacocks are so pretty! *just realized I guessed a Peacock in my post above, but then named a non-peacock...silly me* |

LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | Thanks everybody for the comments and compliments so far. Furthermore, it makes me happy that you guys have fun trying to identify the fishies, something I would not be able to do what-so-ever. Ingo |
