Now that my new rummies died from ich in QT, I have to treat the qt tank. Im going to raise the temp and add a little salt. But I dont know how to keep the filter cycled for the time being. I have some pure ammonia left over from a fishless cycle. How much should I add, its a 20g.

Is there a reason why you can't just knock the QT tank down and re-start it? If you have another tank already then you can just get new filter media and run the filter in your main tank for a bit to get bacteria started...

I've never run a QT or hospital tank continuously. I'd never advise it either as I think it kind of defeats the purpose of having one in the first place.

For a FW QT, you don't need to keep it up and running. When you need one, just set it up then. As for cycling it, use a filter of the same make as the main tank, and just change to a new filter in the main tank, and use the old filter in the QT. This will have enough beneficial bacteria on it, to have a complete cycle for a QT tank that only has one of two ill fish in it. That is if your QT is decent size as compared for the ill fish.

Now on the other hand, for a SW tank, it is recomended to keep a QT tank up and running, as the cycle for them takes 3-5 times to complete.

I agree, when you set up a FW QT, it's done as needed with water from the main tank, and completely broken down and cleaned inbetween uses.

If you have room, i suggest running your QT filter with fresh media in your main tank and just switching that to your QT as needed, that way you always have a cycled QT tank. Also, taking water from your main tank at times of need guarantees no shock from differing water parameters. As your qt sits, the chemistry will gradually wander from your main tank, creating one more thing to deal with.
