I have a 33g set up with 6 guppies, 12 neons, 1 baby pleco (to be moved out when it gets bigger) & 4 dwarf neon rainbowfish.

I've never had rainbowfish before but have been amazed how much their colour has improved since I brought them home. They seam to be stunning little fish (not quite an inch long yet).

Do I need to do anything special to keep them happy? They get fed flake every day & frozen bloodworm every other day (which the males love & femails ignore).

At the moment I don't have any tall plants (just some fake grass stuff) but will be getting something floaty/flowey soon.

i am also new to rainbows, just got a few this year, but from what i noticed they like open swimming space. i had tall plants that were unsorted and they didn't like that much. i would give them swimming space and flakes. it is a feeding frezzy when flakes hit the water, all my rainbows go nuts.

Good water quality, and good quality foods will keep them happy, healthy and colorful. As for the plants, they spawn on plants, so this is the reason most people like to have long thin leaves plants in the tank. It will keep the males colored up even more, as they compete for spawning with the females. Floating plants, especially the fine leaved and long root kinds, will keep them very happy.

As Gary Lange, rainbow guru points out, "rainbows bump and rainbows jump". If your tanks are set up side by side and they can see down the line, they will repeatedly attempt to swim right through the glass to get to the farther reaches (the other tank). They'll take a big run at the glass and hit at the top, the middle, the bottom and then repeat... bump, bump, bump! To prevent injury, he recommends placing an opaque barrier between side by side tanks.

Cover tanks carefully as rainbows jump.

Yep, Gary is a Guru. In fact, he just left for New Guinea yesterday. Can't wait to see what great pics of rainbows he brings back with him from this trip!
