I recently saw an LED moonlight for aquariums on an internet auction. It mounts to a wall near your aquarium and shines a very soft calm blue light through the tank which is supposed to simulate moonlight. It looks very nice and is used for nightime viewing, does anybody suggest or not suggest this light?

Those things are actually meant for reef aquariums, but I suppose they could be used for freshwater tanks as well. Although, if all of yor fish are diurnal then it would be kind of pointless.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

I have these LED Kits, they rock. i would suggest the green and blue colors, i have 2 lights (same color) in each tank. petco has them for decent prices. but i suggest goign online to buy them. their a few bucks cheaper

Fish tanks are an expensive addiction

I have a current usa cf light fixture that actually as a 1 watt light bult right into the middle to simulate moonlight. I actually put it on at night for a few hours, but the center support of the tank blocks some of it. so I need to drill a hole on my tank support so the light would pass thru.

I have a Current fixture with a 1 watt LED also.

Its very soothing at night. The LED creates shimmering light waves all over the tank. I love it.

kmpaton,

Do you have fresh or salt and isn't the light blocked by the tank support?

Whoever said that LED/moon lighting is designed for saltwater tanks, that is wrong. Many fish are nocturnal, whether they are salt or freshwater. These lights are meant to immitate natural moonlight in the wild and nothing else. And, yes, they look so sweet at night!

I have made a DIY lighting system with blue LEDs for my freshwater aquarium and it's absolutely great. It's cheap, it creates no excess heat, it has very low power consumption and most of all it is a visual pleasure (even more because of the white sand in my aquarium - it really looks great with that). I use it as the last stage when the lighting system goes out. It turns on last and for about 45 minutes. Fish seem to like it and I just love it! It's very nice to watch the aquarium with the blue lighting before I go to sleep (it's in my bedroom on the other side of the room from my bed ). Try it!

here is a link to save ya some money by doing it yourself.
[link=DiY LED]http://www.kaotica.com/frag/diy/moonlight/" style="COLOR: #00FFFF[/link]
much cheaper this way.

another purpose for moonlighting on a FW tank is what i plan on useing it for. if you have spawning fish in a community setting the night light will show the parents outlines of on coming predators. this increases the chances of the fry living in a community setting. this only helps with parental fish of course such as rams.

I a CF fixture with four LED moonlights. They're great if you have nocturnal fish, because if you turn out the room light, the fish can't really see you, and go about their business.

I don't run mine all night though. I tried it at first, but I kept waking up and seeing my gouramis and others swimming around like it was the middle of the day. It made me worry the light was a little too bright for moonlight, more like dusk. So, I have a timer shut it off around midnight.
