I whent to a petshot near my house that i had never been to befor to she what the fish where like! what i seen horrified me!!>:I almost every tank i looked in was suffering from some sort of infection! the average tank size was what looked like 5 gal then i came to this one tank and i nearly passed out! it had 8 yes EIGHT! 2" OSCARS IN IT! 2 of them had there scales stripped from their body down to their fleshy insides i tackled the shop owner straight away. i told him how all his tanks where in bad condition and his oscars where totaly unacceptable! He said he had never had oscars befor and wasnt aware of their needs !!I EXPLAINED!! he said he didn't have the room or the tanks to split them up and said that he relies on quick sales this is not the attitude to have

I have been told not to go back to his shop! the cheek of it!

anyway i have contacted my local council and they are going to look into it im

im not out of order am i

would would you have done it that situation???

thanks guys (posted by a verry angry enthusiast!)

Sadly I've noticed alot of horrid conditions for fish. Alot of ppl dont think they can feel so they just dont care. My g/f looks at me like I am crazy when I talk to my fish (usualy telling them how much I love them or repremanding them for bad behevior). I have a bad habit of buying all the betta's at walmart with the lowest water level cause I feel so bad. I mean we are talking about water that barley even covers the poor guys... So i feel your pain and imo contacting your agency was a good step.

Honestly If i'd have seen that I would yelled at the guy and told him to clean up his act or there would be a serious problem and I'd do everything to I could to make sure he went outta buisness.

it is just so upsetting if you treat you kids like that you would have them taking off you and you would be sent to jail! even dogs and cats and most other animals- its illigal to ill treat them why do fish get overlooked?

i see quite a number of lfs' with diseased/dead fish in the tanks. i doubt your local authorities will do anything about it, but it's good for you that you can recognize a bad situation and try to do something about it.

hmmmmmmmm, does this mean i should question my lfs?

cuz they have about 10 firemouth cichlids in a 30x20x20(all cm) tank, and they have millions of albino cories in these sized tanks aswell as tiger barbs, although these are probably only juvi. fish, should they really be given larger tanks?

Pretty much every LFS you go to is going to have overstocked tanks, and to a certain extent, the well-being of the the fish does depend on quick sales.

At the LFS where I work, most of out stock tanks are 20 gallon tanks. With the small fish, it's not uncommon to have fifty of them in there at the time, and we often have about five 6" cichlids in some of the tanks in the cichlid section.

The ammonia and nitrites in the tank are zero, but the nitrates are always really high (50-80ppm) no matter how often we do water changes. The fish are fine like this for a couple months, but after that the high nitrates get to them and the fish start to decline in quality. That's why we depend on them getting sold. If we still have the fish after a month or two, we will lower its price until it gets sold.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

ditto to what cory addict said..

generally turnover in stores is relatively high, so the stocking doesn't matter too much for a short period of time.

Well... my favourite LFS uses a sump system with UV steralisers on their tanks. They still have a max of 'paritioned' 15G tanks... but sharing the load across very oversized sumps (the sumps are 1 to 3 tanks at US30G/sump) means i've never ever seen any bad looking water from them, or bought a sick fish. And... just to top it off... they're CHEAPER than most of their second rate competitors!! Oooh.. and the show tanks they have!! 3 * 300G monsters full of fully grown loaches, sucking cats, and every large chiclid i could have imagined. Hmmm... i think i need to go for a drive!

The LFS i fear most, and only go when looking for dog food (it's kind of a Wal Mart just for pets), uses HOB filters on all of their discoloured, overstock stanks. And now, god help us all, the worst LFS has decided to 'branch' into marine fish I must give them some credit there - someone has decided the marine fish cost to much to treat badly, so they have actually set up a sump system and the water looks good. No UV steralisers though. Still, the fish have no-where to hide and all look quite stressed.

The easiest way to stop these bad fish shops is to not buy anything from them! If enough fish keepers in the local area stop shopping at their store, they will either stop stocking fish, lift their game or go broke. I know in Aus if i complained to the local authorities, they'd laugh at me and write me in the "big book of local wingers". Don't complain... boycote and encourage others to do the same. No money = no bad fish shop.
