I forgot to add that a Black ghost knife would be a good centre piece fish for your tank, once they are tammed they will come out during the day as long as the lights are not too bright.

Rainbows are good cos they generally ignore other species, a few boesmans would be nice, maybe some trilineatas, they are cute , a nice active fish and quite showy being purply magenta with strong black and silvery lines. And they dont seem to grow at the same rates as some of the other rainbowfish. Buy em young for about £5- £7 and they give you joy for years. A 55 would be plenty big enough for them.

have a looky .

Angels arent a bad idea but can be a bit persecutory to smaller fish on occasion, they will also need higher temperatures than your flame tetras will enjoy.Rainbows are much happier in the mid 70's .

I concur with the angelfish. Afterall, there is no tank like a biotope. I'm not a big fan of Celebs. For such a tiny schooling fish, they're really expensive.

The Celeb rainbows are a smaller type(4 would work fine). Otherwise 1 Angel for biotype would be very nice. I have to say bravo to you Tetrafan. Some of the suggestions made to you were idiotic. Way to do your research and realize tank is only a 55. BRAVO.

Keep in mind that most larger cichlids will destroy your other fish. Your rams(I know they are cichlids, but they do not have the general attitude) will have at best tattered fins, and at worst no life. Almost all cichlids will hang out around structure, which is usually the bottom of the tank. The only one I would suggest to try is the angel.

With most cichlids of any size, you are just asking for trouble. Even a Kribensis is likely to bother the other fish.

If you want mid water swimmers, angels are your only true option with cichlids.

Silver dollars also too big for a 55.

Remember people...a 55 gallon...it is not considered a larger tank.

But Black ghost knives get huge. There is one in the 150 gallon tank at my lfs that is about 17 inches long. A bit TOO big for the 55.

Ok, seeing as Acaras get aggressive I won't try them either.

I also should probably add that I am aiming for a bio-type. So really this narrows my question...what SA species will be good for my tank? I'm looking at any cichlid recommendations (besides Angels. If I don't get many other recommendations for some good cichlids I will stick to them).

Anyway thanks for the input so far it's just that I am not really interested in rainbowfish or gouramis.

[edit]Except maybe celebes rainbowfish...my lfs has a few of them. How big do they get? Would a trio be fine or do they need a school? Yeah I know away from the bio-type, but I find them to be very attractive fish

I am going to be starting a 55 very soon. I have most of my stock thought out, but I cannot think of a larger midwater fish.

My stock will be...

10 Flame Tetras
8 Cory's of some sort
2 Blue Rams
2 Bolivian Rams
1 Whiptail cat(maybe...depends if I can get the smaller species or not)
1 small pleco(small as adult such as a BN)

Fully stocked or can I add a larger midwater fish?

Thanks

Hi, i have a nice blue acara male, he swims all over the tank but most of the time he is in the bottom half of the water.

Blue acaras can be a bit aggressive, so if you get one the rams will struggle. I had to take him out of my community tank because he was nipping my angels and rams. My female blue ram died as a result of her injuries.

He is now living in a 20gal tank and is eating the mosquito fish that i keep as live food. Blue acaras are very pretty but once they are about 3-4 inches can cause problems.

I would say Rainbowfish.
There are plenty of rainbows that would look nice in a school of 6 in that tank. Heres some:
Ornatus
Maccoulochi
Irian Reds
Boesmani
Neons Dwarf
Celebes
etc etc many rainbows between 3-6 inches would work.

with rainbows u would need a group and most will groups are too large for a 55.

what i can think of would be a snakeskin gourami,

kinda lower-mid but very peaceful and will grow to the close fit right size.

uaru fernandezyepezi are all from the same family and are mid-water fish

Aren't Uarus expensive and hard to find? I have also heard that they can even be more delicate than Discus.

Would 1 angelfish work or could I have 2? Would 1 even be ok?...I always thought they required around 3 or so buddies unless they were a pair.

I am going to avoid Discus for the time being. I feel that I need more experience under my belt til I try them out.

Not too fond of rainbowfish and I was looking for something a little bigger than a gourami.

I might want to add that I am looking at mainly cichlids. A question, are Blue Acaras midwater or bottom dwellers?

Angelfish, discus, uaru fernandezyepezi are all from the same family and are mid-water fish that would work with the selected fish. Note that the uaru is herbivorous.

You can add a small Angel, that wouldn't eat your Tetra's.
