If a 180G tank is 7ft. X 2ft. X 2ft. then your 4 foot tall tank is twice that. So 360 Gallons....using my roundabout mathematics.

That sounds like it could be right the lady told me it was a 350 gallon. Funny thing is its so huge and heavy its sitting in my backyard with plastic around it till i can find out what to do with it. I imagine it would not be safe on any floors other then a basement or something.

Congratulations on your find. That's so large that you could do just about any kind of setup you would like from a hugh community tank, to a great reef tank, to whatever. What are your preferences??

Jealous!

But great find. Yeah, you want to make sure the floor's sturdy enough to hold the filled tank; figure about 10 pounds per gallon plus rocks/decorations, substrate and fish... in an old house like mine, the basement's about the only floor that could hold it.

First things first, you want to make sure the seal is OK all around the tank, no matter how old. Nothing worse than planning a beautiful tank and there all the water goes out the seams.

Personally, I'd go Bala Sharks, but that's more or less because I can't find a tank that big and my boyfriend's still crying that he doesn't have them.

I wonder who in their right mind would build a 4' tall tank... You DO know maintenance will be a killer, right?

IMO, you should paludarium it. That would be a wicked paludarium set-up, and the added height will allow you to contain the whole paludarium within the tank. With those dimensions I'd rather that tank be sideways, 'cuz 4' is insane and unnecessary!

I agreee with shini considering most people's arm's are not much longer than 3 ft....
But I'd do stingrays, lots of them. (still ticked cause my ray tank idea didn't sit well with the mom)

why not a tank with, 2 pairs each of, blue, gold, bolivian ram, 60+corys, heavly planted, a pair of angels, and a school of cardnilas, leave it for a while, and soon, the fish will finish the stocking

I would think a tank like that would be wasted on herps. Fish can make use of height much better than animals can. For lizards, I think something like a long tank would be better.

this is what i came up with

Tank Volume Calculator
Tank Capacity:
Litres: 1359.21
US Gallons: 359.1
UK Gallons: 299.03

I guess if I had a tank that size I would have to go and either try and breed angelsor more than likely I would try and go to the dark side, yes that would be saltwater...I said try...

I got these measurements from entering 6ft=72in x 2 ft=24in x4ft=48 in....

I do admit cleaning it would be a total pain, but isn't that why we get stepladders? I have to use a chair to clean the back of my 125then again i am short...

No matter what plan it out, and have fun...don't forget to keep us informed on how it goes...heidi michelle

That tank is crying out for a Discus and Rummy Nose mixture. You could put some truly stunning Amazon Swords and Giant Vallis in there for them to swim amongst. That set up could hold 10 Discus and 40 Rummies no problem. Get iridescent lavender Discus and team them with the Rummies for a setup that will be a blast of colour ... a sort of cut-down version of the Liverpool Museum huge Discus tank ...

Either that or you could do a FOWLR marine setup with enough space to grow a Pygoplites diacanthus angel to something approaching full size. Or try your hand at breeding Centropyge angels in it ... with that much space you could have a go.

Whatever you put in it, do it right and that tank will be a prize winner.

First thing I would do is check for leaks and still add some silacone to the seals just for reasurance. Then with alot of patience, wow, what a reef tank that would be. Thats just what I would do though. With a tank that big our couch would have to go just to make room.

Just to note, a 180g is 6ft by 2ft by 2ft.
I calculated your tank to be 359g anyways.

I'll go with african cichlids
A tank that large will be great with haps.

Beautiful!
Heres what I would do if it was mine:
6 Bala Sharks
6 Tinfoil Barbs
1 Chinese Hi Fin Banded Shark
1 Large Pleco of a particularly nice type, perhaps a Beacon Pleco
30 Cardinal Tets
30 Rummynose Tets
6 Silver Dollars
1 Black Ghost Knife
Tons and Tons of rocks, driftwood and plants.
Or Go Brackish and go with this:
12 Mono Sebae
6 Archers
some type of brackish Gobys
HEHEHE
or you could do piranha or pacu..

You could always go Marine, a reef that size would be amazing.
Think of all the clownfish you could have

I was also actually considering building a little shack in my backyard as a little fishtank shack, but i have no idea how much it would cost to build and to heat.

Shini, where there's a will there's a way. I'd find a way to stretch my arms if I had that tank. But a paladarium is an awesome idea. It all depends on what kinds of critters you like though. Some people just don't like lizards and amphibians (not me! Frogs ).

Hearing the dimentions i was thinking it was a display tank from a restaurant or something because it is so tall but not very wide. if it were custom built for a home it would have probably been shorter and wider. in a restaurant the hight would allow people to see it from all arround.

Moving this thing wasn't easy lol. It seems to be a custom but trust me the glass is thick as hell and it has been full before so i'm seriously not all to worried about it not being able to take the pressure. I would think it would have to be a custom tank, as it was made for a restauraunt. There is tons of sealant on it and it looks like theres extra glass on the bottom for support or something. Whoever made it knew what they were doing as far as i can tell. I still truly haven't decided on what to put in it yet either. I will keep you posted as to when i actually set it up.

Just on the frontosa and clown loach thing. I kept them together successfully for 3 years. Frontosas are quite a peaceful cichlid so dont rule out the combination.

there was a good thought about how safe this thisg is. i am having a hard time beleiving a 4 foot high tank. you said it is glass. does it look like a commercial built tank or custom built. like said above if this is under 3/4 inch glass i would not fill it all the way. i have a 120 gallon that is 2' deep and that is 3/8 inch glass. the taller the tanks are the more pressure thay are going to have so if the glass is not thick enough the whole tank will crack. also this thing empty would have to weigh 600+ pounds. how did you move this thing.

I think whether or not the BGK would be ok would entirely depend on the type of cichlids. Now if you are talking about say, Jaguars, or Wolf cichlids, I would say not.
But the average mild tempered cichlid like Keyholes, Firemouths, Bolivian Rams, Blue Rams, Angelfish, Discus, etc would probably be OK with a BGK.
I am unsure about an Oscar though, someone who has kept Oscars might know. When I was a kid all we kept our Oscar with was a jumbo Hypostomus Plecostomus and a Black Shark, so I would know about that.
What type of Cichlids were you interested in?

Well to be honest i have no idea how i could plant this tank anways its just so tall, and the lighting bill?!?!?! whoa haha, I will most likely try to setup some decent rockwork. Bala sharks would do fine in a 6 foot tank, its a mansion compared to the 10 gallon they usually end up in. Although i am not sure i want them all that much right now anyways. I'm probly gonna end up doing SA cichlids/loaches/silver dollars. Although i do really like blackghost knifes....hmm such decisions. Anyone ever kept a knife with cichlids? I know ghosts aren't to aggressive so i don't want it to be the victim of a pushy cichlid.

It's still only 6' long, though, I'm not sure Balas would be best. Silver Dollars could DEFINITELY make a gorgeous display in there, though. Erm, if you're not too attached to the idea of aquatic plants.

My reasoning re: Bala sharks and 6' tanks:
Even given the very conservative estimate that Balas top out as 12" (usually it's 14" and often 18", putting these active schoolers in a 6' tank is the equivalent of putting a group of Zebra Danios in a 6" long box (in this case, a 6x2x4" box) - just plain cruel.
They're huge, extremely active fish, and while 6' may be "better" that doesn't make it right.

Wish i could pick up a tank of that size for that price!!! That tank is a window of opportunities! Definitely worth a well stock of fish!

I'm in love with oscars so i'd be pushing that way but with oscars there is not much you can add to the tank. How bout some Bala's and whatever other fish you like, give the Bala's a tank they deserve, this fish is one of the most abused fish i have seen, often sold in groups at cheap prices for all the wrong reasons!

I really like the malawi haps/peacocks or frontosa idea.

A tank that large is perfect for them.
