lol, I thought I posted in this right after you posted your second thread. Don't know why it did not go through, but any how, lol. I am leaning towards a male, becuase the dorsal does appear to be growing long.

But Cory, now that we do definitely know this is a rainbow, hehehe, I'm gonna move it to that forum.

I thought I posted in this already, oh well, try again, lol.

- Yeah, 3 months ago when you said we'd need to wait until more time passes

So, as you look at the fin, does the picture say anything? In the pic I took from January where the fin is laid down, it does look like the front dorsal is just a tad over the rear.

I thought I posted in this already, oh well, try again, lol. I am leaning towards the turquoise, and also leaning towards a male. The fin trick, is that most males will have a longer first dorsal than the females, in most all rainbows. The first dorsal will usually over lap the second dorsal when they are laid back, in the males.

It's a shame I have to turn the tank lights out to see those beautiful colors . He'd proabably show best in subdued tank lighting and dark gravel. We'll see when I change substrate to Eco-Complete which is dark.

And, this pic taken in January shows him pretty much as he is today, but he was showing more yellow. But, now he is bigger and I'd say more of a sea green at the top half.

I must say that I am surprised with how he loses his coloring in the light and goes pale. He isn't stressed and interacts normally. In fact, it almost seems like an attempt to blend in to the environment. As soon as the tank lights go out, his band comes back really dark and his colors vibrant. At no time is there a change in his behavior between lights on or out.

Fin trick

I just looked back in an old thread and I plucked him from the dead frog's tank October 24th of 2004. He was just not long out of larval stage. He wasn't getting much to eat and I was aware of his presence in that tank for probably 3-4 weeks. We kept thinking the frog would eat him, but didn't. I didn't go over my nephews house but once a week. There had to be infusoria in that tank because nothing was fed to him in the early days. I'm shocked he didn't develop deformaties. I'm sure he was picking on the shrimp pellets too.

That means, he's been with me 5 months and could be a month older - so he's about 6 months of age, but possibly behind the eightball due to little food in the first month.

For reference, here was his October 24th snapshot.

Awwwwwww ... at that size, I wouldn't expect vibrancy even in a male. It could still go wither way, though you could certainly try that fin trick to check, someone or other surely remembers which one's which on that.

Here he is next to some white clouds and harlequin rasboras for comparison. He is the biggest fish in the tank aside from my trilineatus cories.

Does it look more definitive now that he or she is likely a Turquoise Rainbow? Or some other rainbow?
